Popular Swedish AC Milan Stricker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has announced his retirement at the age of 41 trophy-laden Career at some of Europe’s top clubs. The Swede arrived in Milan for a second spell in early 2020, having won the Scudetto with them in 2011, and helped the club win the title again last season.
“I say goodbye to football but not to you,” he said after being feted by the San Siro crowd after Milan’s 3-1 win over Hellas Verona in their season finale on Sunday. The Swede has won countless domestic leagues and cups plus a long list of individual honours but never got his hands on Europe’s elite club competition trophy, the Champions League.
Ibrahimovic, who is Sweden’s all-time top scorer with 62 goals in 121 matches, quit the national team after Euro 2016 but returned in 2021 for their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign.
Ibrahimovic deflected questions regarding his plans for retirement, opting not to divulge any detail. When asked about who could replace him, Ibrahimovic’s answer was clear.
Milan announced this week that Ibrahimovic would be leaving the club at the end of what has been an injury-ravaged season for the forward. Despite his assertion that he would keep playing next season, this proves to be the end of his career. The ex-Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain star has made just four appearances this season, last featuring against Udinese on March 18.
