- Zinedine’s parents moved to Paris (in France) in 1953 from a region called Kabylie in northern Algeria.
- In the mid-1960s, Zidane’s family moved again, this time to Marseille (in France).
- As a child, Zizou inspired players such as Blaz Sliskovic, Enzo Francescoli and Jean-Pierre Papin.
- At age five, he began playing soccer with a group of children at a soccer field in the neighborhood where he lived.
- When he was 10 years old, Zidane received a license and joined a team called US Saint-Henri. He spent a year and a half at the club before joining SO September-Les-Vallons.
- Zidane was spotted by AS Cannes agent while attending a three-day camp at the Regional Center for Sport and Physical Education (CREPS), a football institution run by the French Football Federation. At that time, Zizou was 14 years old.
- When Zidane first joined AS Cannes he planned to stay for six weeks but eventually six weeks turned into four years and a senior international spot.
- At AS Cannes, Zinedine was often bullied because of his race and family which led to him being angry and empathetic. However, Jean Varraud, his coach at the time, taught him how to control and express his anger on the football field.
- He scored his first professional goal for ASCannes on 10 February 1991. He received a car as a gift from Cannes’ director Alain Pedretti after promising Zidane had scored a goal for his team.
