YouTube announced that its YouTube Black Voices Fund, which was created in 2020 with a $100 million investment, has benefited over 500 creators and artists so far. The fund aims to amplify black voices and narratives, allowing them to share their stories with a global audience. As part of the celebration of the 2023 #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund, more than 100 black creators from around the world gathered in Nairobi, Kenya.
YouTube emphasized the tangible growth of creator channels in Africa, highlighting significant increases in revenue generation. In South Africa, the number of YouTube channels earning ZAR 100,000 or more annually rose by over 30% compared to the previous year. In Nigeria, there was a 15% increase in channels earning N100,000 or more, while in Kenya, the number of channels earning KES 100,000 or more increased by over 25%.
YouTube’s Managing Director of Emerging Markets, EMEA, Alex Okosi, expressed the company’s commitment to providing a platform for black creators globally. They also mentioned strategic partnerships with culturally relevant organizations to further support and reach more creators and artists. Overall, the YouTube Black Voices Fund has successfully created opportunities for black artistry to flourish and connect with a wider audience.
