Youths clash with police in Paris after teenager killed in traffic stop
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin reported that 31 people were arrested, and around 40 cars were burned, mostly in the suburb of Nanterre where the victim resided.
Overnight, protesters armed with fireworks clashed with riot police in a Paris suburb following the shooting death of a 17-year-old man by police during a traffic stop. The incident has led to a homicide investigation by prosecutors. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin reported that 31 people were arrested, and around 40 cars were burned, mostly in the suburb of Nanterre where the victim resided.
Video footage revealed a building on fire and burnt barricades on the road, with fireworks being aimed at the police, who responded with tear gas. Darmanin appealed for calm, emphasizing the importance of justice and truth. Approximately 2,000 police officers have been mobilized in the region. The police officer involved in the shooting will face suspension if the charges against him are substantiated. Prosecutors stated that the shooting occurred after the youth failed to comply with a stop order, resulting in the officer firing at him.
A video shared on social media depicted two officers beside the car, a Mercedes AMG, with one officer shooting as the driver pulled away. A local resident and anti-racism campaigner named Mornia Labssi, who spoke with the victim’s family, identified him as Nael of Algerian origin. The Paris police chief, Laurent Nunez, expressed concerns and stated that the justice system would determine the appropriateness of the officer’s actions.
Actor Omar Sy and footballer Kylian Mbappé expressed support for the victim’s family and called for justice. The incident marks the second fatal shooting during a traffic stop in France in 2023.
