Yancy Butler was born as Yancy Victoria Butler on July 2, 1970 in Manhattan, New York, under the birth sign Cancer.
Butler is an American based on her nationality and as far as her ethnicity is concerned, she is white. She is the daughter of Leslie Vega (manager of a theater company) and Joe Butler (drummer and vocalist for The Lovin’ Spoonful, a 1960s rock group). Her father was a friend of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
Butler studied at New York’s prominent HB Studios in 1985. She learned dance and ballet at the Joffrey and Ailey School. In 1991, she earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal art from Sarah Lawrence College. She was also honored with a Griggs Scholar.

In 2003, Yancy Butler was arrested in Delray Beach, Florida for disorderly intoxication. She was sentenced to a substance abuse treatment program after a police officer found her going in and out of traffic.
Butler said she was an alcoholic who was taking medication, according to a Delray Beach police report. At first, she said that she had been kicked out of a rehab center, but then she said that she was still in one, according to the report.
2007, she was arrested in Sag Harbor after police found her passed out drunk at the wheel of her car. Her car was found crashed on the sidewalk of the main street. During that time, she found a half-empty bottle of Smirnoff Voda in her bag. In addition to the alcohol, there were about 14 pills in her bag, one of which was prednisone, while the rest were anti-anxiety drugs. She was unable to walk after the accident, so she was rushed to the hospital.
