Nigerian singer and songwriter, Ayodeji Balogun popularly known as Wizkid has bagged two nominations, at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) for his role in ‘Brown Skin Girl’, a 2019 song by Beyonce.
The project, which is a track off ‘The Lion King: The Gift’, Beyonce’s hit album, was nominated for the ‘Best Cinematography’ and ‘Best R&B’ categories respectively.
Beyonce had last year released the visuals for the project which also featured Blue Ivy Carter, her first daughter with Jay-Z, and Saint JHN.
Wizkid has snagged several awards and recognition for featuring in the song including his first-ever Grammy award in March.
The development comes as Shatta Wale was also nominated for the ‘Best Art Direction for his appearance in ‘Already’, another track in Beyoncé’s album.
Justin Bieber and Megan Thee Stallion topped the list — released on Wednesday — with seven and six nominations respectively with both artists also shortlisted for the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category.
This year’s edition of the annual event, which celebrates the best music videos, will hold on September 12.
In similar news, Wizkid continues to put Afrobeat on the international stage as he sold out London’s O2 Arena with 20,000-capacity in 12 minutes for his concert in November.
The Afrobeats singer, who earlier announced the tour for his ‘Made In Lagos album, broke the news on his Instagram last Friday.
On November 28, the Grammy winner will be performing his album before a full audience at the popular facility.
“Fans will not only be engulfed in the unique sounds, live instrumentation, and vibes of Lagos but will celebrate Wizkid’s love and appreciation for where he comes from and his inspirational journey,” the organizers had said.
Wizkid had also announced a 17-city tour across the United States and Canada for the highly acclaimed album.
He had released the project, which is his fourth album, in October last year — after teasing it for about two years.
The 14-track project featured international heavyweights like Damian Marley, Skepta, H.E.R, and Ella Mai. It also had Nigerian music stars such as Burna Boy, Tems, and Terri.
‘Made in Lagos’ has so far enjoyed widespread acceptance, with the likes of Kylie Jenner, Kevin Hart, and Saweetie dancing to songs off the mid-tempo project.
Barack Obama, former US president, had also listed ‘Essence’ a track off the project, among his favorite songs for 2020.
