Wilson Cruz is an American actor, best known for his role as Rickie Vasquez in the critically acclaimed television series My Called Life and Angel in the Broadway Tour production of Rent . Some of his other work includes recurring characters from Junito on Noah’s arc and Dr. Hugh Culber on Star Trek: Discovery . He came out as gay at the age of 19 and has spoken openly about gay youth.

- In an interview, Wilson revealed that he was probably 7 or 8 years old when he first realized he was different. At the age of 19, Wilson decided to come out gay. Although his mother was initially shocked, she eventually accepted the fact, but his father kicked him out of the house. He had to spend the next few months with his friends or in his car before working things out with his father.
- He got to play Enrique “Rickie” Vasquez, a gay character, on the critically acclaimed television series My So-Called Life which made him the first openly gay actor to ever play an openly gay lead role in a television series.
- The Rickie Vasquez character is also kicked out of his house for being gay on the show, and when he filmed that part it was less than a year ago that he went through the same situation in his real life.
- Wilson is openly gay and an open advocate for LGBT youth, particularly youth of color.
