In an interview, Wilson revealed that he was probably 7 or 8 years old when he first realized he was different. At the age of 19, Wilson decided to come out gay. Although his mother was initially shocked, she eventually accepted the fact, but his father kicked him out of the house. He had to spend the next few months with his friends or in his car before working things out with his father.
2. He got to play Enrique “Rickie” Vasquez, a gay character, on the critically acclaimed television series My So-Called Life which made him the first openly gay actor to ever play an openly gay lead role in a television series.
3. The Rickie Vasquez character is also kicked out of his house for being gay on the show, and when he filmed that part it was less than a year ago that he went through the same situation in his real life.
4. Wilson is openly gay and an open advocate for LGBT youth, particularly youth of color.
5. He served on GLAAD ‘s Board of Directors in 1997 and became its National Spokesperson and Strategic Giving Officer in 2012.
