Willian Borges has terminated his Arsenal contract two years early to join Corinthians and issues a heartfelt message to fans on Instagram.
Willian Borges has terminated his Arsenal contract two years early to join Corinthians and issues a heartfelt message to fans on Instagram. The former Chelsea man joined the club’s London rivals last summer but failed to impress in north London.
Recall that Willian left the Blues because he could not get a three-year deal from the club, which Arsenal obliged and gave him in order to secure the transfer.
At 33, many expected the Brazilian to stay put and collect his hefty wages, which is understandable would have been worth around £10million per year, for two more years.
However, he has instead agreed to terminate his contract. Willian is now set to return home to Brazil and join his boyhood club Corinthians.
Meanwhile, an Arsenal club statement read: “We have reached a mutual agreement with Willian to terminate his contract effective from today.
“The Brazil international joined us from Chelsea last August and made 38 appearances during the 2020/21 campaign.
“He had two more years to run on his contract but following positive and constructive recent discussions with him and his team, he will be leaving for a new opportunity with Corinthians in Brazil, where he began his career.
“Everyone at Arsenal wishes Willian and his family well for the future.
“The contract termination is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.”
