ABOUT WILD ‘N OUT

Wild ‘N Out ( Nick Cannon Presents ) is an American sketch and improv television series created and hosted by comedian Nick Cannon. It debuted on July 28, 2005 on MTV and aired on MTV2 from 2013 to 2016.

In November 2012, MTV2 announced that the series would return in 2013 after a six-year hiatus. The series features new comedy stars, as well as the show’s current cast. The season five premiere drew 1.1 million total viewers, making it the highest-rated telecast in MTV2 history.

On June 9, 2016, MTV announced that Wild ‘N Out had been renewed for an eighth season, which marked the series’ return to its original network. The season premiered on August 4, 2016. The ninth season premiered on June 29, 2017, and marked the series’ return to filming in New York City.

MTV announced the renewal of Wild ‘N Out through Season 16 with 90 new episodes on March 26, 2019.

WILD ‘N OUT PREMISE

Similar in principle to shows such as Whose Line Is It Anyway?, the series pits two teams of comedians against each other in a series of Wild ‘N Out games that are all essentially “improvised” comedy games.

The teams are the ‘Red Squad’, which was the name of the team until Season 5 when they became the ‘Platinum Squad’ and were permanently commanded by Cannon; and the “Black Squad”, led by a celebrity guest until season 7 where the situation was reversed with Cannon becoming the captain of the Black Squad team and the celebrity guest leader of the Platinum Squad.

For Season 8, the colors were revamped again with the Gold Squad replacing the Black Squad. The Gold Squad is led by Cannon while the celebrity guest remains captain of the Platinum Squad. However, as of Season 9, Nick returned to lead his original Red Squad team color while the Black Squad team color also returned.

After three such matches, the two teams face off in the final round of the game called “WildStyle”, in which they must deliver a punch line aimed at their opponent’s team members in a freestyle rap. The comedians “drink” with each other; however, some are impersonal jokes.

Although similar to Whose Line, ‘points don’t matter’, teams score one point per win during normal rounds, plus one point per favorably judged punchline during ‘Wild Style’, making it similar in the improvisational format show ComedySportz.

Each episode also includes a musical performance, sometimes by the guest captain of the Black/Platinum Squad (Nick Cannon performed with Migos in Season 6 in the episode featuring Chanel Iman).

Sometimes the musical guest comes out right before “Wild Style” as the judge of the jams. Major changes were implemented for the second season, including moving the show’s location to Hollywood and the teams now vying for a “Wild ‘N Out” championship belt that if the Black Squad wins, the team captain team can win.

Production Wild ‘N Out

For the first four seasons, the show was filmed from Los Angeles/Hollywood and aired on MTV. The first broadcast episodes were put on hold as Mr. Renaissance Entertainment became Ncredible Entertainment in 2012.

After being renewed in 2012, the show was produced in New York and aired on MTV2 for seasons 5-7, it also returned to that location for season 9. In 2016, the show resumed airing from new episodes on MTV and also for the first time since season 4, production is in Los Angeles. In season 12 to 14, it airs in Atlanta, Georgia

The “Wild ‘n Out Theme Song” from seasons 1-4 was produced by Fatman Scoop. Season 5’s theme music was created by Cannon himself, with a new remixed version for Season 8. “We Gon Wild Out” is the show’s current theme and was introduced in Season 12
