“For about 15 years I always tried to find a routine in the middle of all the stops and starts
and finally just gave in,” Shannon says. “I’ve spoken with other musicians’ wives, and it’s so
heartwarming to know that they haven’t figured it out either. »

Having a smooth re-entry process is still a work in progress, but some changes have been
knocking.

“When Bart came home, [the family] expected him to be there for us right away, but he
was exhausted,” Shannon recalled.

For a fix, the first day is a giveaway, a “daddy’s day off.” Everything is full
speed after that.

There are no marquees or spotlights in the couple’s house; no one can be treated unequally. With children
in different phases, from elementary school to high school, the days are focused on homeschooling,
transitioning children into extracurricular activities, and moving everything else around the house.

“When I’m back, it’s less about ‘celebrating [because] dad is here’ and more about ‘let’s regroup and have some
time together,’” Bart says. “My goal is to do everything [for the group] on the road so I can be
fully present when I’m at home. »

Family time is an integral part of their marriage, so Bart and Shannon intentionally plan shared activities. But the
fun is also balanced with the things that need to be done despite having a task board. The whole family writes down
everything they like – and dislike – to do. Then the weekly tasks are identified and each member of the family receives their own.

“There are fewer complaints because everyone is doing more of what they love,” Shannon says.

For example, Shannon doesn’t fancy wearing the chauffeur’s hat, but Bart happily sits behind the wheel
– even on the very first day home.

“I love to drive. It’s actually one of my greatest joys,” he says. ‘The kids and I can go out
and talk.’

Also, don’t be shocked if you spot Bart wandering around town at night. “I love shopping, so
I signed up for this task,” he explains. “But I’ll go at midnight when nobody’s around and just put my
helmet on,” he continues.

Although it’s not on the expanded chore chart, the couple have a plan to handle one of the biggest
challenges in marriage. “Shannon takes care of the bills,” Bart reveals. “She is amazing in this area. We’d
probably be in jail if I did them.

“I’m the saver, and he’s the spender, but after 22 years we’ve worked on that,” Shannon adds.
According to Bart, the pair were “dirt poor at the time.” Years of managing budgets and better
use of money has made a huge difference – with a few exceptions. “Shannon spends on necessities.
I end up spending on the dumbest things possible,” Bart says. ‘Fortunately, my wife is good at getting
things back.’

Another hurdle is making sure they spend quality time together. The arrangements of five children plus
Bart’s responsibilities with MercyMe can put romance on the line.

“Sometimes our kids hear, ‘Mommy and daddy need some time together. We love you, but we’ll
do something with you later,” Shannon recounts. “There are seasons we do well and seasons we fail a bit,
but we always try. »

“We are affectionate with each other in front of our children,” Bart explains further. ‘I know they are watching, and

Date nights are still a must, but they’ve seen them go from once a week (when living near

2004; Bart’s period of struggle with depression left him choosing to leave the band; and at
times Shannon felt like she was living separate lives with Bart.

Bart’s journey was also difficult for the children. “Our kids tended to be more mad at Bart because he
was away on the weekend,” Shannon explains. “Even if I tried to replace, you can’t replace dad.”

“I couldn’t do it anymore,” Bart says. ‘I looked at Shannon and said, ‘It’s time to fix what’s
broken. I do ministry, and I do family – but family has to win every time. “I had
to be home more. »

The couple took drastic steps to put family first, including moving from Dallas to
Nashville five years ago. The change allows Bart to be closer to his
