Sunday Bada

Another huge name in athletics for Nigeria is Sunday Bada. Sadly no longer with us, he was a top 400m sprinter in his prime and has left a rich legacy behind. Bada was a particular specialist at the World Indoor Championships where his 1997 Gold medal in Paris came after Silver medals in 1993 in Toronto and 1995 in Barcelona.

Perhaps the major highlight of his career though was an Olympic Gold medal. This came after the disqualification of the US men’s relay team in Sydney 2000, which handed the Gold to Nigeria instead.

Mary Onyali-Omagbemi

Onyali-Omagbemi was a top-class sprinter for Nigeria and ended her career as a five-time Olympian. This covered the years 1988 until 2004. During this time, she won Bronze in 1992 at the Barcelona games for the 4 x 100m relay and Bronze in 1996 at the Atlanta games for the 200m.

In addition to her Olympic medals, she also won the 100m event at the 1992 Commonwealth Games and was a constantly outstanding performer in the All-Africa Games. Currently, in an advisory role to the National Sports Commission and involved with the National Principal’s Cup, she is still a revered name in Nigerian athletics.

Innocent Egbunike

An older name from Nigeria’s sporting past, Egbunike is still synonymous with athletics in the country. After impressing with a Gold in the 200m at the 1983 Summer Universiade Games, he made his bow on the world stage with a Bronze at the 1984 Olympics in the 4 x 400m relay.

Many Nigerians will remember him for his stellar performance in the 1987 All Africa Games. This saw Nigeria needing to win the 4 x 400m relay event to go first in the overall standings. Although behind when he took the baton, Egbunike ran an amazing lap to hand his country victory.
