Whitney Houston was a true queen of pop in the 80s and early 90s and triumphed in the cinema with “The Bodyguard.” But her life was marked by her fall into drug hell. “The great devil is in me,” she came to declare publicly. The actress and singer Ella passed away on Saturday, February 11, as she was preparing to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party. The lifeless body of the artist was found in her room, without the causes of death being known so far. The hotel workers had noticed that she seemed upset. The Grammy gala will be a tribute to her figure.

Born in Los Angeles on August 9, 1963, Whitney Elizabeth Houston began in the children’s gospel choir at her church in New Jersey. She later began singing with her mother (soul and gospel singer Cissy Houston) at different venues where she was discovered by Clive Davis, a record company president. She immediately offered him a contract to record her first album. Several of the songs included in it -such as “How Will I Know” or “Greatest Love of All”- became number one.

In 1992, Whitney Houston made her big movie debut starring in The Bodyguard , alongside Kevin Costner . Although she recorded 6 songs for the soundtrack, her version of “I Will Always Love You”, previously performed by Dolly Parton , was especially successful . Another of her songs, “I Have Nothing”, earned an Oscar nomination for best song. A whopping 43 million copies were shipped worldwide, making it the best-selling soundtrack of all time.

Houston married Bobby Brown, also a singer, on July 18, 1992. Shortly after, she gave birth to a girl named Bobbi Kristina.

He returned to the cinema in 1992 with Waiting for a breather directed by Forest Whitaker . Again, the soundtrack was a great success. In The Preacher’s Wife she shared the screen with Denzel Washington . After acknowledging her problems with cocaine and other substances, she was admitted to a rehabilitation center on several occasions. When the rumor mill pointed out that her condition was quite worrying, she reappeared looking quite recovered and released a new album in 2009. She was even considering new film projects, such as a sequel to Waiting for a Breath and ended up opting for the Sparkle remake., a musical film from 1976. He came to finish the film, still unreleased.

Whitney Houston owned a powerful and unmistakable voice. Ann Powers, of the Los Angeles Times, defined the interpreter as a “national treasure”.
