War on 'Ashawo': Another LG bans prostitution, alcohol businesses in Jigawa

As the war on ‘ashawo’, Nigeria sarcasm for sex workers by the Nigerian government continues, the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State has issued a seven-day notice to commercial sex workers and bar attendants to vacate the area.

Council chairman, Alhaji Baffa Yahaya, gave the notice after meeting with the security committee on Saturday.

He said that the move will help the local government in its efforts to ensure maximum security of the area.

“Henceforth, prostitution, selling and drinking alcohol is prohibited in Taura Local Government. Whoever is arrested will face the wrath of the law.

“I, therefore, issue a seven-day notice to whoever takes it as means of livelihood to change a business or vacate the area,” he said.

Baffa said the council will take serious action against anybody arrested violating the directives.

This is coming after Gwaram local Government had issued a similar ultimatum to commercial sex workers and bar attendants to change the business or vacate the area.

Meanwhile, in another news, the Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has told Governor Dapo Abiodun to appoint a substantive Rector for Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) Abeokuta.

According to reports,  MAPOLY is presently being run by Dr Adeoye Odedeji, who was appointed by Governor Dapo Abiodun as the Acting Rector in December 2019.

Odedeji became the Acting Rector following the appointment of the former Rector, Samson Odedina as a Commissioner in Gov Abiodun’s cabinet.

The State Government was said to have conducted interviews for candidates interested in becoming the Rector of the foremost Ogun polytechnic.

However, the government has not taken a decision on who becomes the substantive head of the polytechnic, even as different groups lobby for preferred candidates.

At a press briefing in Abeokuta on Sunday, Ogun NANS Chairman, Damilola Simeon, charged Abiodun to do the needful by giving MAPOLY a befitting Rector.

Simeon was alarmed that the delay in choosing a substantive Rector was hampering the development of the academic institution.

He alleged that the lack of a substantive Rector in the polytechnic had “slowed down its operation.”

The student’s body asked Abiodun to consider the most qualified candidate for the job.

While warning that due process is followed, the NANS leader said that he was aware that some are “running around to influence the process for their selfish and political gains.”

“We want to state categorically that, the leadership of NANS and NAOSS will resist any attempt by any one individual to impose an unqualified and unpopular candidate as the Rector of the institution. We will not only fight against this but also mobilise our students from all over the State in a protest and shut down the State,” he threatened.
