- Tanesha Johnson – Kartel and Tanesha Shorty Johnson had been married for decades and shared three sons, Little Vybz, Little Addi (Akheel Palmer), and Addi Aiko. In 2014, after Kartel was imprisoned for life, Tanesha had announced that she would wait 35 years for her husband. In October 2017, Kartel announced that he and his common-law life ended their relationship by confirming rumors that the song “Don’t Come Back” was addressed to Shorty. It was the second time since his incarceration that the two had cut ties, having done so in 2016.
- Stacy Elliott (2006-2008) – Kartel met Stacy Elliott, who is a bank supervisor from The Bronx in New York, at a stage show opposite Bounty Killer in 2001. They dated a long time and were married on January 9, 2006 in a private ceremony at the Registrar Department’s offices in Trevennion Park, Kingston. Since his US visa was revoked shortly after his marriage and Stacy never visited him in Jamaica, they never lived as a couple. He filed for divorce in September 2008 after Stacy allegedly gave birth to a son by another man since Kartel was never around to father the child.
- Amanda Ennevor – Vybz has a daughter named Amani from a relationship with Jamaican socialite Amanda Ennevor. He has revealed he never met his daughter when the mother-daughter duo relocated to Canada shortly thereafter. The two met while filming a video for Street Vybz Rum in 2010.

- He had a break in the music industry in the early 1990s when he wrote songs for Bounty Killer.
- He revealed to the Jamaica Observer that when he grew up he wanted to be a journalist, lawyer or soldier.
- He had formed his own band with 2 friends and called it “Vibes Cartel”. However, due to poor success, the group broke up and he adopted a new name, Vybz Kartel, and became a solo artist.
- He started writing lyrics at the age of 11.
- Kartel was sentenced to life in prison in 2014 for the murder of his partner Clive Lizard Williams. Judge Lennox Campbell had announced that his parole would not begin until after 35 years in prison.
- In 2003, Kartel was involved in a pre-planned on-stage clash with Jamaican dancehall DJ Ninjaman at the annual Portmore Dancehall Festival. 4 days later, the two parties settled their differences and ended their feud.
