VIRTUALLY VAIN: THE MAN BEHIND THE CHANNEL
Despite several attempts to find out, no one really knows the man behind this channel. Many have tried and failed to find out more about this “African Drug Lord”. This mystery YouTuber emerged on September 25, 2012 and has been rocking the gaming community ever since. Over the past 6 years, he was able to amass over a million subscribers for just 12 videos.
Obviously, he succeeded in creating content that was able to attract a large audience from all over the world. However, he likes to stay off the radar, which makes it very difficult for people to find out more information about him.
VIRTUALLY VAIN: WHAT IT DOES
If you don’t already know, Virtually Vain is famous for scaring gamers while pretending to be a man from Zimbabwe with a deep voice and a thick accent. Mostly his videos start with Vain being a seemingly random person from Africa who makes fun and insults for his accent. This then leads him to scare the daylight of people who laugh at him. It begins to share all of these players’ information, including their names, locations, family members, and even their phone numbers on occasion.
Although these videos are hilarious for us as viewers, we can only imagine what the victim of these pranks is going through. For a random stranger to know everything about you, and threatening you in a gaming session is as scary as it gets. Fortunately, Vain reassures them once the prank is over. As a nice touch, he even asks if he can upload those videos to YouTube.
VIRTUALLY VAIN: HOW HE DOES IT
According to the creator of these videos, it is not just for entertainment that he makes them. He thinks it’s a public service to show that our information isn’t always safe. According to an interview with Vain on Business Insider, he says there’s nothing illegal about what he’s doing. Vain goes on to say that there is no hacking involved and these informative/entertaining videos help conscious people be more responsible with the information they share online.

To find player information, Vain starts by searching the internet for the player’s tag or their usernames. Once he gets his hands on social media platforms through these usernames, Vain can potentially gain access to a user’s location and phone number details. It is not that simple, Vain also uses the “Whitepages.com” site which allows you to find information regarding location and phone number while working under the law. Moreover, it even uses IP addresses to track the location of these players. And with all of this information combined, gamers will experience their worst nightmares when it’s all entertainment and games for us as viewers.
VIRTUALLY VAIN: HOW YOU CAN BE SAFE
Privacy has been a gig for the modern age with various aspects of your information present somewhere on the internet. We can, however, be careful with the details we share online. You can start by creating an alias or username that is different from your name. In this way, you can better protect the information that is essential to you.
The next thing you can do is be on a virtual network. There are various software and extensions that allow you to do this. Using a virtual private network can hide your IP address and you can surf the internet from a completely different location. However, not all VPN software or extensions are reliable, so be sure to choose the right one.
With all of that said and done, no one’s information is really safe at this time and time. However, you can make things harder and stay on the safer side of things. You can also read more about Vain and his work on YouTube where he goes by the VirtuallyVain handle .
