In May 2011, he made his professional debut with Dutch side Groningen in a match against ADO Den Haag. He came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute for his side’s 4-2 win.
In September 2015 he made his first competitive appearance for Southampton FC in an away game against West Bromwich Albion. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.
In January 2018 he made his debut for Liverpool FC in an FA Cup third round match against derby rivals Everton FC. He scored a header to give his side a 2-1 win.

- At the beginning of his football career he worked as a dishwasher in the Oncle Jean restaurant in Breda.
- He almost died at the age of 19 after suffering a burst appendix. He had to spend 12 days in the hospital and it took him 4 months to recover. When he was discharged from the hospital he lost 2 stones.
- In June 2013 he joined Celtic from Groningen, the Scottish club paying the Dutch side £2.6million. Also, one of the transfer clauses promised Groningen a 10% sales fee if Van Dijk moved to another club.
- At the end of his debut season with the Celtics, he was one of three Celtics players named to the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. He was reinstated into the team at the end of the following season.
- In September 2015, Southampton paid a reported £13m in transfer fees to Celtics. He also signed a 5-year contract with his new club.
- Impressed by his immense performances in his debut season, Southampton offered him a new 6-year contract in May 2016. The club appointed him captain in January 2017.
- After a transfer saga that lasted more than half a year, Liverpool finally signed him from Southampton in January 2018. The Merseyside giants paid a record-breaking £75million for the transfer.
- His transfer from Southampton to Liverpool made him the most expensive defender in the history of the game.
