Interview excerpt:
You are known for your roles as a boy in love. Where does your beauty come from?
I do not know. I can’t really tell if it was my mom or my dad. I would say it was a mix of the two, because if my mother had been married to someone else or my father had been married to someone else, the outcome would probably have been different.
We all know how intense the sun is in Ghana, but you have remained fair in complexion. Do you have a beauty regimen?
I get sunburned sometimes, not just in Ghana, Nigeria too; it depends on the location of the movie i’m shooting. But I drink a lot of water and I eat in pieces. That’s all.
We heard so many rumors about you? How do you feel when you hear rumors about yourself?
Often I don’t care, because I know it’s one of those things. Sometimes, if I can counter or demystify them through my social networks, I do; but people will continue to say such things anyway.
How do you deal with being a father, husband and actor?
I don’t think it’s such a big problem. I lead a normal life; I’m just going to (play) these roles. When I’m home, I’m home; and when I’m at work, I don’t mess with that. I do things that a normal father would do. It’s the same with you. I don’t know if you are married, but anyone who is married, works and has children would come home from work and take care of the family. And that’s the same thing I do; there is nothing extraordinary about it. When I’m home, I play with my kids when I’m supposed to.
But when you have to leave the house for days and go on set, how do you make up for that time away?
Usually when I get home I try to spend a lot more time with them. We go to the beach or the pool, watch movies or take a long drive; or we stay home and play games. I try to make up for so many things.
Who are your best Nigerian actors and actresses?
(Laughter) You’re not going to put me on the spot with that. I enjoyed working with all my colleagues.
There was a time when Geneviève said you weren’t a good actor. How did you react to this?
I read the article, but I didn’t mind because it was her opinion, and she’s entitled to it. I never answered it and I don’t think I will. Nevertheless, I have no bad feelings towards him. Now, whether his opinion has changed or is still the same, it doesn’t make much difference to me, because I know I’m a fantastic actor and I do what I do with passion. I appreciate it and I do my best. That said, if I’m given a job to do and she’s involved, I’ll do the job. I won’t say because she said that, I won’t do the job.
But if you feel like confronting her, right?
If I meet her at a function or on a movie set, I’ll ask her; but I won’t do it through the media. Some of these things that people write in newspapers or on blogs aren’t even true; it is possible that they twisted his words. They do this to me all the time, so it’s possible they did this to her. But when I meet her personally, I will ask her if she said that. And if she did, the conversation will continue, about why she said it and how she said it.
You have an accent. What is your background?
Well, I’m a mix of Dutch, Liberian and Ghanaian.
How was he growing up?
I grew up with two women in my life – my mother and my sister; and we are always moving from place to place. I lost my dad when I was six, so I didn’t really have a dad around. My mom taught me to be strong, to do the right thing, and to make sure I grew up a good breed – contrary to what a lot of people say about light-skinned men…
What do people say about fair skinned guys
You know what they say; I don’t need to tell you.
I don’t know what they say. I’m also fair-skinned, so tell me.
Well, I don’t mean light-skinned, but “half-castes”. People usually say they’re bad boys.
And you’re not a bad boy?
No I’m not.
You got married quite young. How do you overcome the temptations of your friends and close colleagues?
Well, I mentioned earlier that that was my mindset: keep it professional. I try to be as professional as possible, and you know sometimes you have to be in a romantic scene with an actress and keep it professional because that’s the beauty of the job. You can actually be romantic and make viewers realize that you’re actually in love with a particular woman, but at the same time, when they say, “Cut!”, you have no feelings for her.
Have you ever been attracted to an actress you were with on set?
I do not think so. The only one I ever read was when they said I broke up Chika Ike’s marriage. I don’t see how that makes sense; but they said I helped break up his marriage.
And your female fans? How often do they bother you?
What do you mean by “disturb”?
How often do you receive calls, emails and tweets from your female fans?
I wouldn’t call it disruption; these are people who like my work and who want to know me personally. Yes, I often receive calls, but I try to adapt. I can’t keep up with all of them so sometimes I just ignore while sometimes I try to answer their questions and inquiries.
How does your wife handle your female fans?
She is very cool with them. She understands the nature of my work and she is totally supportive of what I do. She has the same spirit as me – which is to remain professional.
Do you have any weaknesses?
I have a hard time getting angry, even when it comes to acting. It’s pretty hard for me to get angry while playing because, naturally, it takes a lot to get angry. And when I have to get angry in a movie, it empties me. But for the past three years I’ve been able to work on it
