Initially, V wanted to be a professional singer while he was in elementary school, and to pursue that dream, he started taking saxophone lessons in the first half of middle school. He originally joined Big Hit Entertainment as a trainee after succeeding in a Daegu audition.

V enrolled at Global Cyber University after finishing Korean Arts High School in 2014, and he graduated in August 2020 with a degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment. He will begin studying for a Master of Business Administration in Advertising and Media in 2021 at Hanyang Cyber University.

V’s Career

He debuted with BTS on Mnet’s M Countdown on June 13, 2013, performing the song “No More Dream” off their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool. When he co-wrote and co-produced the song “Hold Me Tight” for The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1, he received his first music composition credit.

In addition, he helped write the lyrics for the song “Boyz with Fun,” which was co-written by fellow band member SUGA. For the following album, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2, the melody from V was combined with the original lyrics from Jung Kook for the song “Run.”

The solo song “Stigma” from the album Wings, which peaked at 26 on the Gaon Music Chart and 10 on the Billboard World Digital Singles Chart, was the next to receive the same treatment. Unofficially, V has also made available covers of “Hug Me” by BTS member j-hope and “Someone Like You” by Adele.

In May 2018, the teaser for BTS’ then-upcoming third album, Love Yourself: Tear, featured his second solo song, “Singularity.” The Guardian included “Singularity” in their “Top 50 tracks for June 2018” playlist a month after it was published.

It was ranked number 28 on Billboard’s list of the “Top 50 BTS songs” according to critics. On October 25, BBC radio played the song for the first time in the UK. Critics generally gave “Singularity” positive reviews, and as a result, it was listed on multiple year-end Critics’ Choice lists.

Alongside “FAKE LOVE,” it was named 20th on The New York Times’ list of “The 65 Best Songs of 2018”. It was ranked as the fourth “greatest and most replayable song of 2018” by LA Times Pop Music Critic Mikael Wood. It was listed in the Guardian’s “Best Music of 2018: Albums and Tracks” list as one of music critic Laura Snapes’ favorites.
