UTME 2025: Over 1.5 Million Candidates Score Below 200 as JAMB Raises Alarm

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised concerns over the performance of candidates in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing that more than 1.5 million test-takers scored below 200.
According to the data released on Monday, out of the 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the exam, only 420,415—just 21%—managed to hit the 200 mark or higher, a typical cutoff point for admission into most Nigerian universities. Even more striking, less than 1% of the total candidates scored above 300.
The figures have triggered discussions about the state of education in the country, with experts and stakeholders calling for urgent reforms.

JAMB also gave insight into the participation of underage candidates. Out of 40,247 candidates allowed to sit for the exam despite being below the official age requirement, only 467 (1.16%) met the benchmark for what JAMB classifies as “exceptional ability.” Their performance in three additional evaluation stages will be assessed later.

In addition to poor performance, the board flagged a number of issues: 97 candidates were found guilty of examination malpractice, while 2,157 are currently under investigation for suspected cheating. Another 71,701 candidates were marked absent, and a separate batch is being reviewed for biometric-related issues. Those cleared will be rescheduled for testing.
JAMB further noted that results for certain categories of candidates, including visually impaired individuals and those classified under the JEOG group, are still being processed.
A press conference is expected later in the week to officially announce the release of individual scores and provide guidance on how candidates can check their results.
