Unknown gunmen have killed soldiers who were keeping guard along the highway,  thereafter freed over 200 prisoners on the medium federal correctional centre in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident which happened in the prison centre which is on the Kabba- Lokoja highway was carried out on Sunday night through Monday morning.

More so, it was revealed that the gunmen after killing the soldiers guarding the highway proceeded and launched an attack on the prison officers before making ways to set all the prisoners free.

The early morning downpour on Monday led to their escape as the building housing the inmates were reportedly submerged by flood.

However, about 100 of the inmates have been rearrested, while an unspecified number voluntarily returned.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of zone 8, Lokoja, Ayuba Ede has confirmed the killing of two soldiers on the roadblock before the Kabba Correctional Centre, Kogi State.

Edeh said the State Commissioner of Police and other heads of security agencies have swung into action to do an assessment of the cause of the prison break.
