The National Universities Commission (NUC) has named the University of Ibadan (UI) as the best federal institution in Nigeria for 2021.

The commission announced this at a two-day capacity building workshop organised by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in Abuja Monday.

Speaking at the event, Peter Okebukola, NUC’s former executive secretary, said this year’s ranking involved 113 universities and was done using 12 indicators.

Okebukola, who led the NUC’s committee on the ranking, said the institutions were ranked based on a total number of full-time students, the number of international students, students and staff ratio, efficiency, google scholar index, and contribution to the knowledge economy.

Other criteria, according to him, include the percentage of international staff, the percentage of programmes with full-time accreditation, and all citations per capita.

Okebukola disclosed that the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) came second on the list. He added that the full report on the ranking would be made available to the NUC and uploaded on its website in due course.

“For this 2021 edition, based on the 12 indicators that we have developed, University of Ibadan is the first followed by Federal University of Technology Akure,” he said.

“Next year we will look at the indicators that we used this year and see whether there are things to add or drop.

“So it is going to be an annual thing. The full report of the ranking which covers the best university in each region of the country with details of every statistics will be released soonest.”

In his remarks, Abubakar Rasheed, executive secretary of the NUC, said the 2022 edition of the ranking would be more comprehensive.

Rasheed commended the ranking committee for coming up with a distinct template for the ranking of Nigerian universities. He also called for improved funding for universities in Nigeria to enable them to operate at international standards.
