Early Life
Tyler Perry was born Emmitt Perry, Jr. on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Despite not finishing high school, he received a GED. Tyler started writing as a way to help heal his mental wounds after experiencing abuse at the hands of various family members throughout his earlier years.
In his early 20s, he was motivated to pursue a career in writing after watching an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show that discussed the uplifting and therapeutic effects that writing can have on a person. Writing served as a useful diversion for Perry. Later, he wrote a series of letters to himself that served as the basis for the musical I Know I’ve Been Changed.
His theater plays, like this one, swiftly grew in popularity across Atlanta and beyond, reaching a peak of more than 35,000 spectators every week.
According to reports, Perry sold more than $100 million worth of tickets to his plays as well as $30 million worth of associated videos and products before shooting a single Hollywood movie.
He had a difficult upbringing because his father physically assaulted him, and he frequently had suicidal thoughts. He even attempted suicide once.
He went to church every Sunday with his mother because he found solace in her. To further disassociate himself from his father, he changed his name to Tyler when he was 16 years old. He also dropped out of high school at that time.
When he was a young guy, he overheard someone on the Oprah Winfrey show say that writing inspired and helped people get over their despair. So he started writing the 1992 production of his musical “I Know I’ve Been Changed.”
Tyler Perry’s Carer
Tyler Perry has always been aware that the chances were against him from the start because he was born into poverty in New Orleans, was maltreated as a youngster by his father, and was sexually assaulted by the mother of a friend. He started writing as therapy and got involved in his neighborhood church as a place of safety.
Tyler continually revised and produced his musical following its inaugural performance despite his precarious financial situation. I Know I’ve Been Changed, a musical by Tyler, was favorably appreciated by audiences in 1998, and it proceeded to perform in several venues.
He created the play “I Can Do Bad All by Myself” in 2000, which starred Tyler Perry as the legendary “Madea,” a role he performed. He produced “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” a year later and “Madea’s Family Reunion” the following year, all of which were well-received.
Jumping off of his domestic success, Perry presented a proposition to the production company Lionsgate. Perry would contribute half of the required $5.5 million for a prospective movie’s budget.
The other half was contributed by Lionsgate, who also collected a small marketing fee and a 12 percent distribution fee. After those expenses, they would divide the profits equally. The 2005 film Diary of a Mad Black Woman served as their debut production under this arrangement.
The movie made $50.6 million in domestic ticket sales and ultimately made $150 million more because of TV syndication and home video sales. Perry owns the content and receives a split of the revenue as part of his contract with Lionsgate.
