Twitter Ban: We’re monitoring Twitter under new owner – Lai Mohammed
- Minister of Information said he is watching Twitter closely for fake news under Elon Musk
- Lai Mohammed said we will not sit by and let Twitter throw our nation into crisis.
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture has said that the Federal Government is closely watching Twitter now that Elon Musk is the company’s new owner.
The FG had allegedly used the social media site to disseminate false information and hate speech in an effort to undermine national cohesion when it banned it in 2021.
The minister, who spoke on Thursday at a news conference in Abuja, said there are no plans to outlaw the platform once more. According to the minister, he had been asked several times since the new ownership whether another ban was on the horizon.
Lai Mohammed said, “We have no intention of banning Twitter again. But we will also not sit by and allow any platform whatsoever to throw our nation into crisis.
“Let me say this, We are closely monitoring the evolving developments at Twitter. It has never been our intention to ban any social media platform or stifle free speech. Not at all.
“Many have called to ask us what will become of our agreement with Twitter in view of the change in its ownership and they have also asked for our reaction following reports that there has been a spike in fake news, disinformation, and hate speech since the micro-blogging site changed ownership.
“We have also been asked if there is going to be another ban.
