Tullio Pinelli
Tullio Pinelli has been one of the great screenwriters of Italian cinema. In his extensive filmography, his works under the orders of Federico Fellini stand out. In his films he portrayed the consequences of the most notorious historical events of the 20th century, in Italy. The renowned screenwriter died on Saturday, March 7, at his residence in Rome. He had become a centenarian and was close to turning 101.
Born in Turin in 1908, Tullio Pinelli studied law and practiced as a lawyer for a long time. During World War II he discovered his worth as a writer, and began creating plays. It took him a long time to start his career as a screenwriter, since he didn’t start writing for the cinema until he was 36 years old, when he debuted with In cerca di felicità . He wrote Love , for Roberto Rossellini and The Way of Hope , for Pietro Germi , who nicknamed him ‘Plumilla de Oro’. When he began to have prestige, the great Italian directors disputed it, such as Michelangelo Antonioni ( The Three Faces ), Mario Monicelli (Amici miei, Speriamo che sia femmina ), Alberto Lattuada ( El molino del Po ) and Dino Risi ( El gaucho ).
But his best titles were those he shot together with the legendary Federico Fellini , whom he met in the mid-40s at the Cinecittà studios, where they both worked. They connected so well that they developed his particular working method, which consisted of the director telling him images that he had conceived. Pinelli wrote them down and composed a story that would give them unity. His relationship with Fellini was very difficult, due to his strong character. “I realized from the first moment that he was a great egocentric. But he was a genius, ”explained Pinelli, who always maintained the friendship. He wrote for him ‘Un agenzia matrimoniale’, a segment of Love in the City , ‘Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio’, by Bocaccio 70 , Souls without conscience, Fellini 8 and 1/2 , La dolce vita , Giulietta of the Spirits , Variety Lights , The White Sheikh , La Strada , The Useless , Ginger and Fred , and The Voice of the Moon .
