He grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles. along with her two half-sisters, Allisyn Ashley Brazo , who is an actress and her brother, Cory who is a firefighter.

Kalanick studied computer engineering and business economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. He learned to code in high school. He left UCLA to work at his file-sharing company.

While a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, he was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity and started his first business, an online file-sharing service called Scrub .

Kalanick along with his classmates, Micheal Todd and Busam Win dropped out of UCLA in 1998 to help Y Rodrigues founded Scour Inc., an Internet search engine and file-sharing service that allows users to share music and movies online. Although its services became popular, the company was sued for copyright infringement by the film and recording industries.

The company finally filed for bankruptcy in 2000, and later sold all assets. Even after an unsuccessful start, it didn’t stop Kalanick from pursuing his career in the field and he soon started a new company called Red Swoosh , another peer-to-peer file-sharing company.
