Christian Bale had just dropped to 121 pounds for his role in The Machinist (2004) when he got to play Batman in Batman Begins. In two months, the Welsh actor had gained 60 pounds – a remarkable achievement. He did this through a high carbohydrate diet of bread and pasta. Over the next three months, he gained 39 pounds to settle at 220 pounds. He followed a strict diet of steamed vegetables, tuna and chicken along with a strenuous exercise regimen that included three hours of running and weight training.

Remember Bane the muscular killer rises in The DarkRitter? Tom Hardy played this role after gaining thirty pounds. Although he originally wanted to increase his weight to 198 pounds, he later decided to go to 190. Fans wanted Bane to get a lot taller, but Hardy took the criticism with a pinch of salt. It was difficult to perfect a character on a cult show like Batman.
