Top 6 Body Parts Insured by Celebrities
If your entire livelihood depends on a particular skill or body part, then in theory it only makes financial sense to insure it. Many celebrities (or their employers) in certain fields have therefore taken incredibly prudent steps to protect themselves against loss by insuring a soccer player’s legs or a singer’s vocal cords. Many celebrity insurance stories relate to the promotional work they have done. For example, if a celebrity advertises toothpaste, that company will likely insure that celebrity’s teeth. However, the amounts force a laugh.
Here are the top 6 body parts celebrities have been oddly assured:
Legs
In one of celebrity’s most notorious cases, David Beckham’s legs were famously worth $70 million — although we’re hoping his insurance policy will cover both time and soccer damages. Not to be outdone, Real Madrid publicly announced in 2009 that it had insured the legs of star player Cristiano Ronaldo for US$144 million in the event a foul struck him with a permanent leg injury.
vocal cords
Many singers and singers can make themselves pretty penny out of singing a tune, and because problems like vocal nodules are relatively common, many place a high value on their delicate and overused vocal cords. Bruce Springsteen, the boss, has reportedly insured his own vocal cords for $5.7 million with Lloyds of London, an insurer that specializes in insuring all things weird and wonderful.
taste buds
Food and wine critics place great value on their keen ability to discern the delicate flavors of a particular dish or drink. So it makes sense that food critic Egon Ronay and wine taster Ilya Gort insured taste and smell for $400,000 and $8 million apiece, respectively. The former is particularly interesting because scientists aren’t yet sure exactly which part of the mouth allows humans to judge taste. How he would test his damaged sense of taste is currently unknown.
middle finger
If you’re a guitar player for a living then you’ve come to the right place. Tactile fingers are probably the most valuable part of your body. So it makes sense that guitarists all the way up to the mighty Keith Richards would have their fingers insured, this particular guitarist values his bird-slapping finger
at an insane $1.6 million. Perhaps the best insurance-related story is that of Jeff Beck, who upgraded his insurance to $700,000 per finger after accidentally cutting off a fingertip while chopping carrots.
teeth
In another case of publicity needs dictating insurance, Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera had her dazzling white smile insured for $10 million while participating in a charity campaign with teeth whitening company Aquafresh aimed at giving unemployed women free dental care. If you’re wondering how much dental care could cost $10 million, let’s call it 10101010 from Walgreen’s 99-cent toothbrushes.
Old people
In a well-heard but comically untrue rumor, Jennifer Lopez uninsured her signature for $27 million. That doesn’t mean celebrities haven’t insured their assets, though: According to Time, Brazilian playmate Suzana Alves had her bum,
ankles and knees insured for $2 million as part of the insurers’ ad campaign.
