In the current scenario, the top sports teams have conquered new horizons and has become much more than just a sports team. They have become huge brands. The top teams in the professional sports leagues have become massive corporations capable of generating revenue that would put the top corporations to shame. The competitions between the best athletes are shown around the world, helping clubs to raise millions for media rights.

Revenue from goals, equipment sponsorship, stadium naming rights, prize money from top competitions and merch revenue have made teams richer than ever. But modern teams also spend millions to maintain their dominance. They pay above-average salaries to the players tasked with the best sporting results, which would further increase the popularity of the teams.

The list published by Sporting Intelligence shows the highest paid sports teams of 2015. And unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by football teams. There are eight football teams in the top 12, three of which come from baseball and one from basketball. Here are the top ten highest paid sports teams in the world.

(Please note that the average annual wage means the total wage bill divided by the number of players.)

  1. Arsenal: £4,054,066 / $6,950,225 average annual wage

Under manager Arsene Wenger, the London club has become one of the most successful and well-known English clubs of the Premier League era. Including this year’s FA Cup win, in which they completely surpassed Aston Villa, they have won a record 12 FA Cups. Indeed, by guiding his side to their sixth FA Cup win, Wenger became the most successful manager in cup history. The club’s attractive and fluid style of play has made them a hugely popular team. A large part of their cult popularity can be attributed to the unbeatable 2003/04 season in which they won the league title without losing a single game. The club’s leading players during this period included Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira and Freddie Ljungberg.

Among the club’s highest-paid players are German playmaker Mesut Ozil (£140,000), Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez (£130,000) and England striker Theo Walcott (£110,000).

  1. New York Yankees: £4,263,577 / $7,309,407 average annual salary

The Bronx-based baseball team is arguably one of the most popular baseball teams. Her immense and continued success goes a long way in cementing her popularity. They’ve won 18 division titles, 40 AL pennants, and 27 world championships, all of which are MLB records. With an estimated value of approximately $2.3 billion, it is the highest valued sports franchise in the United States and the fourth largest in the world. The $2.3 billion Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009, is the most expensive stadium ever built. However, in recent years, the team has not been able to repeat the immense success it has enjoyed in the past. Her last World Series title came back in 2009. However, last season they showed promising results and put on a strong performance. Perhaps they will return to their best in the years to come.

The New York Yankees’ highest-paid players include pitcher CC Sabathia at $24,285,714, first baseman Mark Teixeira at $23,125,000 and infielder Alex Rodriguez at $22,000,000.

  1. Chelsea: £4,353,056 / $7,462,809 average annual salary

In eighth place we have the reigning English Premier League champions, who have been in dominant form over the past season. Club owner Roman Abramovich would be delighted to see his beloved club only have the third highest wage bill in the league but still be able to win the league with ease. It’s not like money is an issue for Roman. After acquiring the London-based club for £140m in 2003, he has pumped more than £1bn into the club to help them become a fixture in the league. However, over the years the club have turned a profit which in 2014 reached their highest-ever profit of £18.4m. Playmaker Eden Hazard, who was voted player of the year last season, is the highest paid player at the club. He is said to be earning £200,000 a week. The second highest is Spanish striker Diego Costa, who earns £185,000 a week.

  1. Bayern Munich: £4,468,643 / $7,660,968 average annual salary

The Bavarian giants are the most successful team in Germany. They have won 25 national titles and 17 national cups. With ten appearances in European Cup / UEFA Champions League finals, the club is one of the most successful in Europe. After the Portuguese club SL Benfica is the second largest club in the world with over 251,000 members. As always, they are irresistible and stylish on the field. In the last three years they have won many league titles, two national cups and the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich is the only German club list. However, with sales in excess of $500 million, they have no problem paying high salaries. The club’s highest-paid players are Arjen Robben, Robert Lewandowski, Philipp Lahm and Franck Ribéry. All four should earn 160,000 euros.

  1. Manchester United: £4,679,377 / $8,022,247 average annual salary

Without a doubt, Manchester United is the most successful English club with 20 league titles. They are also the only English club to complete historic highs. Her other trophy streak includes 11 FA Cups, four League Cups, a record 20 FA Community Shields and three European Cups. The club is currently in the process of rebuilding after a long hiatus and the prolific manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired two seasons ago. Last season, under the tutelage of Louis Van Gaal, the club spent around $150m to return to their earlier successful years. They were partially successful as the club qualified for the Champions League. And this summer the club has to spend a lot of money again,

The highest-paid player at the club is the team’s captain, Wayne Rooney, who earns £300,000 a week. The second highest-earning player at the club was Radamel Falcao, who earned £280,000. However, he will no longer be on the club’s payroll as the club decided against a permanent loan.

  1. Los Angeles Dodgers: £4,679,937 / $8,023,207 average annual salary

While they don’t have a huge trophy count like the other baseball teams on our list, they still hold some of the most prestigious records in championship history. The team has produced 12 Rookie of the Year honorees, including four consecutive from 1979 to 1982 and five consecutive from 1992 to 1996. These are the longest streaks in Major League Baseball history . This year, no other MLB team has spent as much on player salaries as Dodgers. However, Dodgers, with their stream of regular and massive earnings, should have no problem covering salaries. They are in the middle of a media rights deal that could earn the club over $7 billion over 25 years.

2014 National League Most Valuable Player Clayton Kershaw is the highest-earning player on the team’s payroll with an annual salary of $31,000,000. The second highest earning player is Zack Greinke, who earns $27,000,000 annually.

  1. Barcelona: £4,715,116 / $8,083,518 average annual salary

The Catalan side are cited by many as the best team of the decade. In the last decade the club have won four UEFA Champions League titles, two of which have been won during peak seasons. Under former player Pep Guardiola, the club won a staggering fourteen titles in four years. During this period the club won three league titles and two UEFA league titles. Led by the genius Lionel Messi, the team has wowed fans around the world with its stunning and mesmerizing style of play. So it’s only logical that the diminutive Argentine is the highest-paid player. The four-time Ballon d’Or winner is paid £256,000 a week after tax. The second highest paid player is Luis Suarez, who played a key role in the club’s recent treble success. And in third place is the third member of the much-vaunted attacking line, Neymar, at £150,000. Club legends Andrés Iniesta and Xavi also earn the same amount.

  1. Manchester City: £5,015,122 / $8,597,844 average annual salary

Since purchasing the club in 2008, SheikhMansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan has pumped an enormous amount of capital into the club to make it successful. And it has been partially successful as the club have won two league titles in the last five years. But it is Europe where the club have failed on a regular basis and failed embarrassingly time and time again. Last year the club were sanctioned under UEFA’s new fair play financial system for their extravagant spending and lack of a balance sheet. The club were fined €60m and asked to limit their spending to €49m for the 2014 season. However, the club administration is keen to improve the squad this summer by spending more than $150m to buy Paul Pogba,

Yaya Toure at £240,000 a week and David Silva at £200,000 a week are the club’s highest-paid players. Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Samir Nasri are other well-paid players.

  1. Real Madrid: £5,040,240 / $8,641,385 average annual wage

Real Madrid is the most successful team in theEuropean competition. They have won the UEFA Champions League title ten times, most recently a year ago after beating city rivals Atletico Madrid in the final. The club has also won 32 league titles and 19 Copa del Rey titles. They are also considered the most valuable sports team in the world with a value of €2.5 billion and the richest football club in the world with annual revenues of €549.5 million. However, last season was less than ideal for the club. By January they were well on their way to winning all the trophies. However, the season ended with zero trophies. The club have sacked Carlo Ancelotti and brought in Rafa Benitez to guide the club to the trophies next season.

Unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest paid player at the club. He’s taking home £288,000 a week after tax. In second place is Gareth Bale with a weekly wage of £256,000.

  1. Paris Saint-Germain: £5,298,693 / $9,083,993 average annual salary

Paris Saint-Germain had just won two league titles before Qatar Sports Investments became the club’s majority owner. Since taking over, the club has won league titles three times in a row. Last season they won the domestic high. The club owners have invested immense capital to bring the club to a level where it can rank among the best clubs in the world. And don’t be surprised if the youngster from the capital manages to make a deep entrance into the UEFA Champions League or even win the competition in the near future. In fact, the club’s administration is keen to kickstart another summer of heavy spending to make the club strong enough to hold its own against the top European sides like Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The enigmatic Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the highest-paid player at the club, with a salary of €262,500 a week. In contrast, his strike partner Edinson Cavani earns £160,000 a week.
