Nicknamed Smoke, Anthony Wayne Stewart is a semi-retired American racing driver and current owner of the NASCAR team. He is a three-time NASCAR Cup Series Drivers’ Champion, winning championships in 2002, 2005 and 2011. He won the NASCAR Cup titles as a team owner with himself in 2011 and with Kevin Harvick as as drivers in 2014. Stewart won titles in Indy, Midget, Sprint and USAC Silver Crown cars throughout his racing career. He is the first driver in history to win an IndyCar and NASCAR championship.
In 2011, Stewart became the first owner-driver to win the Cup Series championship since Alan Kulwicki, which ended Jimmie Johnson’s five consecutive championships. Stewart intended to move to the Winston Cup Series in 1997 driving for Ranier-Walsh Racing after working with the team part-time during the 1996 NASCAR Busch Series season. But, when Stewart realized he wasn’t ready for the transfer, the deal fell through.
After a 20-year driving career in NASCAR, the last 18 of which were spent in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Stewart retired after the 2016 season from his NASCAR driving duties to focus on his co-ownership of Stewart- Haas Racing (SHR) with industrialist Gene Haas, and to compete in the kind of open-wheel dirt racing where his path to NASCAR began.
Stewart has won 12 driving championships after first racing a kart on a Westport, Indiana, circuit in 1978. His most famous awards are the three he won in the NASCAR Cup Series. Since 2002, Stewart has won her first crown.
Stewart returned to sprint car racing on February 15, 2014, in his #14 sprint car, the same car he broke his leg in 2013. When asked why he returned, Stewart said he liked sprint race cars too much to quit. Stewart defied his critics in a massive comeback story by sweeping and winning a speed car race at Tri-City Motor Speedway.
