He won the Tony and was directed by filmmakers such as David Lean, Ron Howard and Joel Schumacher. Irish film, television and stage actor Niall Toibin passed away on November 13, 2019, in Dublin, aged 89. 

Born on November 21 of the year of the economic crash, 1929, in Cork, in the southwest of the country, Niall Toibin was the son of a teacher and book writer. As a child he sang in the cathedral choir in his hometown, and later joined a theater society. He began his journey on the airwaves, as part of the acting troupe Éireann. He began to gain recognition when he took to the stage to perform Brendan Behan’s 1967 “Borstal Boy” in Dublin. The production was staged on Broadway, for which it won the Tony, the most prestigious award in American theater.

On film he was a member of the Irish Republican Army in David Lean ‘s Ryan’s Daughter , father to Tom Cruise  in Ron Howard ‘s The Far Horizon , and a judge in Joel Schumacher ‘s Veronica Guerin , his latest feature. He also had time to participate in numerous series, such as the well-remembered  Return to Brideshead , where he gave life to a priest. 

In 1957, Toibín married Frances Judith Kenny, who was with him until her death in 2002. They had five children and seven grandchildren.
