Biography
Tobi Amusan was born on the 23rd of April 1997, in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria. She attended Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu-Ode for secondary education and continued at the University of Texas at El Paso. She began showing interest in sports and athletic potential at an early age but began her career professionally in 2013.
Amusan began to attain limelight after winning a silver medal at the 2013 African Youth Championships in Warri. She also claimed gold in the 100 meters hurdles at the 2015 African Junior Athletics Championships in Addis Ababa. She made her all-Africa Game debut in 2015, winning the gold medal in the 100 meters hurdles.
As a student of the University of Texas at El Paso, Amusan won a Gold medal in both the 100 mH and the 200 m at the C-USA Championship. She also won a Silver medal in long run in the same competition. She was also a runner-up at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100 mH. Amusan also competed at the 2016 World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, taking fifth place in the championship final. She went on to represent Nigeria at the Rio Olympic Games reaching the semifinals of the 100mh.
Career Success
Aside from her recent successes of winning the 2022 World Athletics Championships 100 meters hurdles, setting a new world record of 12.12 seconds in the semifinal and a wind-assisted 12.06 in the final, Tobi Amusan has a lot of honors to her name.
She won the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships, in the 100 meters hurdles ahead of Camacho-Quinn who was the champion the previous year. Tobi Amusan was the 2018 Commonwealth and 2018 African champion and is also a two-time African Games champion in the event. She won the Diamond League Trophy in 2021 becoming the Nigerian to do so.
Amusan opened her 2022 season by winning the 2022 Diamond League event in Paris, where she set an African record by 0.01s with a time of 12.41s. She also won gold in the 100m hurdles at the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius, defending her title successfully with a time of 12.57s ( wind-aided). She also competed in the women’s 4×100m and won gold.
Later in 2022, she competed in a Diamond League meet, finishing second with a time of 12.60s, behind Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn.
