  • Trouble looms over Tinubu’s candidacy as Deloitte denies record of his employment
  • Tinubu has earlier claimed that he had a salary deposit of roughly $1.8 million when employed by Deloitte & Touche.

Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, was never employed by Deloitte, USA, a major audit and consulting firm, according to a recent document from the company. This is because Deloitte claimed it has no record of his employment.

Due to his alleged role in the forfeiture of $460,000, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier on Sunday demanded Tinubu’s disqualification under Section 137 of the 1999 Constitution.

If there had been no criminal conspiracy, according to PDP, there should have been no forfeiture in the first place. But the revelation Tinubu made in the interview he granted was at odds with this new development.

Former governor of Lagos State Tinubu stated during an interview with TheNews Magazine that he had a salary deposit of roughly $1.8 million when employed by Deloitte & Touche.

He said, “My bonus was $850,000 before taxes. My salaries were also being paid into the bank and I was not touching them. At the time, my salary deposit in the bank had risen to $1.8million.”

However, investigative journalist David Hundeyin claimed he subpoenaed Deloitte USA for the employment records of the APC candidate after further investigating Tinubu’s claims.

His research was published on his verified Twitter account, @DavidHundeyin, where it was noted that Deloitte was unable to locate any records containing the name requested.

Paul Ibe, Atiku Abubakar’s media advisor, mentioned Tinubu’s numerous scandals on his verified Twitter account.

“In 1999 Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT lied under oath in his @inecnigeria form CF001, when he claimed to have attended The University of Chicago @UChicago & Govt College Ibadan. But the attached notarized document proves beyond reasonable doubt that Tinubu lied under oath.

“The certified true copy of his own affidavit is hereby placed side-by-side with the notarised document to show that he did not only lie on oath but forged the documents. Yes, it is 30 years since Bola Tinubu lied under oath, but crime does not rot.”

If you recall, soon after Tinubu was selected to run for governor of Lagos on the ticket of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the controversy around him broke out. The first election after June 12 had created a prebendal political environment that had produced Tinubu.

In those heady days between August 1998 and May 1999, every political interest was geared toward putting an end to the transition and sending the military back to its barracks.

All permutations were also geared toward appeasing what was then commonly known as the “Yoruba interest” due to the perceived injustices of the June 12 election cancellation by the military junta and the subsequent death of Bashorun Moshood Abiola in custody.

Bola Tinubu, a senator chosen by the Social Democratic Party, had only recently entered politics (SDP). He was also a well-known ally of Bashorun Abiola, and as a result of their association, he played a significant role in the post-election talks and later in the struggle to ratify Mr. Abiola as president.

In order to lobby the “international community,” in particular the US government, for the revalidation of the June 12 election that had been canceled by the military and resulted in Abiola’s imprisonment, Tinubu, a prominent supporter of the June 12 election, went into exile with a few other well-known actors.

Many others, including the playwright and poet Wole Soyinka, have acknowledged that Tinubu committed considerable resources to that battle on a global scale.

Where, though, did Bola Tinubu obtain all of his resources? Without a doubt, it wasn’t from his rightful salary as Mobil’s treasurer. This was the uncertainty that lingered, and it wasn’t resolved until he was essentially railroaded onto the AD ticket and chosen as Lagos’ governor as a result.

In Lagos, Nigeria, several concerned residents spoke out loud about the new governor in 1999. The accounts he gave in his affidavit did not accord with any established facts regarding Bola Tinubu.

In actuality, Bola Tinubu didn’t exist. A ghost, he was! He wasn’t truly from Lagos, to start with. He was from an area in Osun State’s interior named Iragbaiji. So how did he come to be the son of Madam Tinubu, the Iyaloja of Lagos?

Second, Bola Tinubu claimed to have attended the Children’s Home School in Ibadan, the prestigious Government College in Ibadan, the University of Chicago, and a school that didn’t exist: St. Paul’s School Aroloya.

First off, there is no mention of a St. Paul’s School in Aroloya, and no one at the Government College Ibadan remembered Tinubu. His name wasn’t on the University of Chicago’s rolls, either.

He may have gone to Chicago State University, which was by no means the University of Chicago, it turned out. So, who was Bola Tinubu in real life? The first serious defense of Bola Ahmed Tinubu against what was later revealed to be a case of lies and forgeries was launched by the late Gani Fawehinmi.
