American goalkeeper Tim Howard plays for the US national team and English club Everton. He has been famous for playing, without hesitation until the end despite suffering an injury, in most of the games he plays. Extremely accident-prone, Tim has established his name as an extraordinary soccer player, humanitarian, and well-known celebrity in his country.

Timothy Matthew Howard was born on March 6 , 1979 to an African-American father and a Hungarian mother who separated when he was three years old. Raised in New Jersey, USA, his father kept his presence in his and his brother’s lives and inspired them to play sports. From a very young age, Tim showed considerable interest in basketball and soccer. When he was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, and before he was a teenager, the coach of the US under-17 men’s national soccer team saw him at a soccer camp, which brought Tim under protecting him.

After proving his versatility as a good soccer player, as a midfielder, and also as a basketball player, Tim was noticed to be better at soccer and also as a goalkeeper. His secondary education began with Montclair Kimberly Academy, which he dropped out as a junior before graduating from North Brunswick Township High School. At the tender age of 15, Tim was a youth national team player and made his international debut against Honduras in the under 17 team.

Tim’s first club indulgence was with the North Jersey Imperials, for whom he played in six games before being sent to the MetroStars by manager Tim Mulqueen. Howard’s debut with the MetroStars on August 18, 1998 was impressive, with five saves leading to a win against Colorado. During the 1999 MLS season, Tim made eight starts in nine contests for the MetroStars. He had a 1.58 GAA and won one game, while the team as a whole won seven games on the season.

In 2000, Tim posted a 5-2-2 record with a 1.59 GAA and played the season splitting his time between the MetroStars and the US Olympic Team. He won three US Open Cup starts the same year and became the youngest player to win the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award in the coming year. Another of his accomplishments was the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award after having played in every minute of every game in the league with 146 saves, a 1.33 GAA and a 13-03 record.

Tim Howard played in 27 of the 28 regular season games in 2002, with four shutouts for the MetroStars. Starting in 2003, he appeared in thirteen games with three clean sheets before leaving the club. A transfer fee of $4 million led to the transfer of this young player to Manchester United as the club’s first goalkeeper. His start went well after saving Arsenal’s decisive penalty and an FA Cup home win over Manchester City. Giving FC Porto a last-minute goal was what shattered his confidence when United were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League. Due to this, he was replaced by Roy Carroll and later regained his starting position after a rest period. Tim took the winner’s medal in the 2004 FA Final, becoming only the second American player to do so. The same year, he was named one of the PFA’s Best XI.

Tim’s second season with Manchester United did not go well for him and he was replaced by Carroll several times after failing to impress with his performance. Carroll, not Tim, played in the FA Cup final loss to Arsenal. The end of the 2004-05 season led to the signing of a new contract that will run until 2009, with Manchester United.

Howard joined his current team, Everton, on loan for the 2006-07 season, making his debut against Watford. In February 2007 he signed a permanent contract for a salary of 3 million euros. Tim’s lack of presence at a game against Manchester United sparked much speculation about a clause in his loan deal to do so. But the Football Association investigated the matter and no such clause or breach of rules had been made in this regard. Tim’s 100thEverton’s appearance was against West Ham United on 8 November 2008. In the 2009 FA Cup semi-final, Howard saved two penalties against his former club Manchester United, leading Everton to reach the final against Chelsea. The 2008–09 season was the record season for the most clean sheets in league games in a season for Howard. His 2009–10 season began with four consecutive clean sheets, including a match at Portsmouth that saw him win and win the Man of the Match award. He captained his team for the first time in a 3-3 draw against Chelsea on December 12, 2009 at Stamford Bridge.

In the 2011-12 season, Tim scored his first goal as goalkeeper in a 2-1 loss against Bolton Wanderers after a 102-yard clearance at Goodison Park. This made him the fourth goalkeeper to score in a Premier League game, but he considered this incident cruel and not a celebration.

A new contract, to keep Howard in the team until 2016, was signed in March 2012. On 2 March 2013, his 210 consecutive Premier League appearances came to an end after he missed a game against Reading. due to a finger injury. In May 2013, Howard kept his 100th clean sheet for Everton in a draw against Liverpool. On April 24, Howard’s contract to stay at Everton was extended until 2018.

Tim Howard’s international career began at a very young age as a youth national soccer player on the US National Team at the 1999 World Youth Championship held in Nigeria. He also participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics. He earned his first cap against Ecuador on March 10, 2002. Howard was named to the United States’ roster for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany on May 2, 2006 along with two other goalies. He became the team’s first choice in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup final in a 2-1 win over Mexico. As for the 2009 Confederations Cup, Howard was the starting goalkeeper. His eight saves against Spain in the semifinals earned him his first clean sheet and the first shutout for the Spanish team in the tournament.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Tim was the starting goalkeeper and was awarded the Man of the Match award for his performance against England. After the 2011 Gold Cup Final, his controversial statement that the post-match ceremony being held in Spanish despite the tournament being held in the United States was an embarrassment, made the news.
