Tim Hetherington was a British photojournalist by race. A prestigious war correspondent, he took images of the conflict in Libya for Vanity Fair, in the city of Misrata. During an attack he died as a result of a mortar shot. Three other journalists were seriously injured in the same confrontation. It happened on April 20, 2011.

Born in Liverpool in 1970, Tim Hetherington studied Literature at Oxford, and later photojournalism in Cardiff. He spent much of his career in Africa, shooting images from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. He won the World Press Photo Award in 2007. His images of sleeping Liberian soldiers that he exhibited in various cities were very successful.

Together with the writer Sebastian Junger , he decided to risk his money to finance the documentary Restrepo , which follows the daily lives of a group of soldiers in Afghanistan.

“We had a camera and another backup. It was made with what we could carry on our backs, without a tripod. I would like to know how many films are made with just that. When we arrived in Restrepo, there was no electricity, no water. We returned every two weeks to the main base to reload them,” Hetherington said. “His work was rewarded with an Oscar nomination and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for Best Documentary.
