TILL LINDEMANN FEELING B

Lindemann in 1986 started playing drums for Schwerin-based experimental rock band First Arsch, which released an album called Saddle Up in 1992 and played a song “Lied von der unruhevollen Jugend” with a punk band called Feeling B, which was the former band of Rammstein members Paul H. Landers, Christoph “Doom” Schneider, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz, in 1989.

During his time at Feeling B, he played drums in the band. In the 1990s, Till started writing lyrics. In 1994 the band entered and won a competition in Berlin which allowed them to professionally record a four track demo. Asked why Rammstein was named after the Ramstein air show disaster, he said he had watched footage of the incident on TV and he and band mates wanted to make a memorial musical. Lindemann then moved to Berlin.

LINDEMANN RAMMSTEIN

During De Rammstein ‘s early years, due to his exaggerated use of pyrotechnics, Lindemann burned his ears, hair, and arms. His teammate Christoph Schneider commented: “Until he gets burned all the time, but he likes the pain.” An incident in September 1996 caused part of the band’s set to burn, and as a result Lindemann obtained their certification in pyrotechnics so that the band could perform with pyrotechnics more safely than before.

LINDEMANN CONTROVERSIAL

For example, on June 18, 1999, “Bück Dich” was performed in the same controversial fashion at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. In 1999, the band were blamed for the 1999 Columbine Massacre, which they denied their music was a factor in. In November 2002 Lindemann’s poetry book Messer was published. It consists of 54 poems compiled by Gert Hof, the author of the Rammstein book and who has been the band’s pyrodesigner for the past seven years. In July 2010, Till, along with Flake, was interviewed by heavy metal anthropologist Sam Dunn for the shock rock-themed VH1 series Classic Metal Evolution.

TO LINDEMANN’S WOUNDS

Till is no stranger to injuries, as he mentioned early in Rammstein’s career that he had burned himself several times with non-professional pyrotechnics. While performing in Sweden in 2005, he injured his knee on stage when keyboardist Flake accidentally ran into him while riding a Segway PT.

This injury led to the cancellation of several tour dates in Asia. In 2005, five Rammstein albums received platinum awards, and the band also received the “World Sales Awards” for over 10 million copies sold worldwide.

TILL LINDEMANN ‘I HURT YOU’

During the filming of the group’s music video for “Ich tu dir weh”, Lindemann wanted a light to be put in his mouth to create a visually stunning effect. Teammate Paul Landers suggested he use a flesh-colored thread and run it along his cheek to shine a light into his mouth from the outside. He refused and instead opted to have a surgical incision in his left cheek so that a light could be passed into his mouth directly, and largely out of sight.

“THE HAMMER OF TILL”

There is a specific Lindemann performance move, dubbed ‘The Till Hammer’. This move is where he bends his knees, beats his thigh with a fist in a pounding motion while turning his head from side to side. On occasion, Flake has been seen to parody the move on stage. Unlike most singers, Lindemann has stated in an interview that he dislikes being stared at on stage and would wear sunglasses to block the audience’s view.

The primary purpose of the band’s signature pyrotechnics has also been stated to actually be a tool to distract the audience’s attention from Lindeman, while serving as a spectacle for the audience. Lindemann also chooses to look out the back of the mixing booth or makes hand gestures during guitar solos to keep the audience from looking directly at him. Due to his stage anxiety, Lindemann typically forces his bandmates to use a dinghy to crowd-surf during shows, as it distracts the audience’s attention from the stage for several minutes at a time.

IN THE SILENT NIGHTS

In 2011, Roadrunner Records listed Lindemann at number 50 on the 50 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time. In 2013, Lindemann’s second book of poetry, In Stillen Nächten was published. He commented on the poetry saying, “The vast majority of my poems could have been written a few hundred years earlier.” On his 52nd birthday, January 4, 2015, it was announced that Lindemann would start a new project with Peter Tägtgren named Lindemann. The band released their debut album Skills in Pills in June 2015.

TO LINDEMANN’S RELIGION

Until in an interview in 2011 said that he still had strong ties to the traditions of East Germany. He finds “de-traditionalization” disturbing and declares that there is no more authenticity. Lindemann featured two sculptures and his original poem scripts in his 2014 book In Silent Nights in a gallery in Dresden.

Lindemann also wrote lyrics in 2014 for German schlager singer-songwriter Roland Kaiser for his album Soul Tracks. He went on to state that he “hates noise” and often goes to a northern village between Schwerin and Wismar. Among Lindemann’s favorite bands are Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath and singers Marilyn Manson and Chris Isaak. Lindemann is an atheist.
