Chelsea fans have already poured praises on Thomas Tuchel as he celebrates one year since he joined The Blues. Recall that Tuchel’s appointment as Chelsea manager following the sacking of Frank Lampard – the 14th manager of the post-2003 Roman Abramovich era at the club.
Tuchel joined Chelsea after a run of just two wins in eight-under Lampard – the club visibly low on confidence and 9th in the league following a dire 2-0 loss at Leicester, Brendan Rodger’s men thoroughly outplaying the Blues.
It has been nothing short of a sensational journey so far – the German leading Chelsea to their second Champions League trophy in May last year, as well securing a top-four finish last season and delivering the UEFA Super Cup in August.
No doubt, Thomas Tuchel has seemingly united the fanbase after splits under Maurizio Sarri and Frank Lampard’s tenures and incorporated and maximized players who appeared to have no future at the club post-2021 (Jorginho, Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso). This is a testament to both his tactical intelligence and superb man-management skills.
In terms of statistical standings, Tuchel has won 40 of the 67 games he has managed to date – a win percentage of 59%, the same proportion as Mourinho’s second spell at the club.
Chelsea fans will be keen to see these numbers increase over the coming years – with the Special One’s 185 games during his first spell the highest figure in the Roman era.
While speaking with newsmen, Joe Cole said: “Barring Mourinho’s first spell, he has had the biggest impact of anyone managing Chelsea. He is universally loved and respected by everyone at the training ground.
“He is a breath of fresh air. Winning the Champions League is an incredible achievement but it is also about the way he has come in.
“Chelsea is a very successful club but it can be turbulent. A lot of managers can buckle under that pressure — even experienced ones.
“But the way the players have responded to him has been great. You couldn’t have envisaged a better first year in charge. Thomas is a very smart man who recognised the quality players straight away.
“But he also recognised the soul and style of the club; he understands the history of the club. He gets it.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea has less than a week to conduct any January transfer business to strengthen Thomas Tuchel’s side for the remainder of the Premier League season.
Finding themselves in a title battle at the back end of 2021, the Blues’ end-of-year form and start to 2022 has seen Manchester City charge away at the summit, while Chelsea looks to retain their top-four status.
Many fans wanted to see incomings in this window – especially given the defensive injury and contract issues – but so far none have been forthcoming.
With a host of contracts expiring in the summer, there’s a need to conduct activity in the market – and French football is an area where the Blues could focus their attention.
