INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS LAW – ROCK AND ROLL WONDERLAND

Source: thinkco.com

Five years and dozens of interviews after I first met him, I had the pleasure of speaking with the charming Will Estes about his role as a child actor, his new role in Blue Bloods and his talented co-stars.

Q: You have been playing since you were very young. Why do you think so many child actors have so many problems? Willpower: I think Los Angeles can be a tough place, the industry can be tough. I think that’s a place where the values aren’t always clear, there’s a weird set of values assigned to an actor based on whether you’re working or not. A lot of kids come here after high school or college and they don’t have a home. I grew up here, so I had my friends and my family. It was (playing) something I did, not who I was. Q: The last time we spoke, you were in Reunion; Did TPTB ever tell you who the killer was? Will:No. I think there were inherent challenges in the structure of the writing that got us in some trouble. There were ideas, but I couldn’t even tell you what they all were. ‘ Q: Tell us about Blue Bloods. Will:I’m very excited about Blue Bloods. It’s a show about a cop family, a New York City Police Department family. There is a lot of action, a lot of excitement and the police battle between good and evil. Everything revolves around this wonderful family drama starring Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Len Cariou. Donnie is my older brother and Bridget is my older sister. Donnie is a bit of a rough detective and Bridget is a brilliant DA assistant. In the pilot, she ends up having to bail Donnie out of the hot water he gets into. Tom Selleck plays the police chief and Len Cariou is the grandfather who was the police chief. Q: And your character? Will:I play Jamie Reagan and I’m the youngest brother in the family. My character Jamie is a bit different in that he went to Harvard Law and graduated, but much to his fiancé’s chagrin, he ends up joining the police. His brother dying in the line of duty a few years ago might have something to do with it. Jamie wants to be a cop like his dad and grandpa, that’s what he does. Q: What an incredibly talented cast, it must be thrilling to work with these actors. Will:Absolutely! What’s equally exciting is that Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green, who were the screenwriters for The Sopranos, wrote the pilot. I was more excited when I read this than anything I’ve read in a very long time and that was before I knew who was attached to it. Of course, working with Bridget, Donnie, Len and Tom is equally exciting. Q: Did you do anything special to prepare for this role? Will:We have a technical adviser from the NYPD. I’ve played in the army before, I’ve played in a navy, so that kind of action transfers. I know the police like the marines. You must have 60 college credits to join the NYPD or have been in the military. People keep asking me what am I going to do to study to be a cop, but I think it might be easier for me to play a cop than a Harvard graduate. The tech advisor gave me a huge packet on the NYPD. I hope I can take a ride and get into the compound and hang out with the guys. Q: Are there any other projects underway? Will:I did a little movie with great actors called Not Since You. It’s not out yet as far as I know. After that, I made another film which is not finished yet, Magic Valley. Since that interview, Blue Bloods has established itself as one of CBS’ most trusted dramas, completing seven full seasons and filming over 150 episodes. It consistently ranks in the top 20 of all regular network television programs and shows no signs of slowing down. Will Estes’ character and performances remained central to the drama’s success.
