- When Silva was 14, he first caught the attention of Fluminense coach Maurinho during a friendly in Xerem. He did a brief rehearsal, during which he didn’t get enough opportunity to demonstrate his talent.
- At the age of 15, Thiago took a test drive for Olaria, Flamengo and Madureira but was rejected by each of them.
- He was also rejected by Botafogo, after which he joined the small Brazilian team called Barcelona, which competed in the lower leagues in Brazil.
- Silva turned professional in 2001 while playing for RS Futebol Clube in Brazil’s third division.
- As a teenager, Silva was wanted by Italian club Roma. However, the Brazilian turned down the offer.
- He joined Juventude in 2004, where he played for six months.
- At the age of 20, sports magazine Placar named Thiago the third best defender in Brazil. He was also named to Team of the Season.
- In 2004, Silva moved to Porto after the Portuguese club spent €2.5m on his contract.
- In 2005, Thiago moved to Dynamo Moscow. He didn’t get a chance to play for the first six months as he suffered from tuberculosis and had to spend time in the hospital. The doctors told him that if he had come two weeks later he would have died. During his recovery process, Silva wanted to retire from football, but his mother convinced him to reconsider his decision.
