“They Mocked Me For Not Having A Husband” – Actress Funke Akindele Breaks Down Over Political Criticism, Reveals Why She Finally Saw A Therapist

Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed how harsh public criticism during her political campaign drove her to therapy for the first time in her life.

In a candid sit-down with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Akindele opened up about the emotional toll of her 2023 Deputy Governorship bid in Lagos under the PDP. She recalled breaking down after watching a video where some women mocked her for not having a husband and still daring to run for public office.

“There was one video I watched where women were mocking me for not having a husband, and I want to do politics. I broke down and cried. I told myself I needed to speak to a therapist,” she disclosed.

The Battle on Buka Street star said while she had always believed in the power of therapy, fear of gossip kept her from seeking help sooner. “I kept acting strong while they were throwing everything at me,” she added.

Now a strong advocate for mental health, the record-breaking actress encouraged Nigerians dealing with emotional pressure not to bottle things up.
