Therapist Returns to Nigeria, Opens Clinic in Lagos—Ends Up Broke, Begging Clients Ask for Cash Instead of Healing

Popular Nigerian skit maker, Craze Clown, has taken to social media to express his deep frustration over the harsh reality facing his friend—a trained therapist who returned to Nigeria with hopes of making a difference, only to be humbled by the system.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Craze Clown revealed that his friend, who opened a therapy clinic in Lagos over a year ago, hasn’t managed to treat a single client successfully. Instead of seeking mental healing, most of the visitors to the clinic reportedly end up begging for financial help—right in the middle of their sessions.
The situation got so bizarre that, according to Craze Clown, his therapist friend even got into a physical altercation with one of the so-called patients.
He wrote:
The post went viral, sparking hilarious but thought-provoking reactions from Nigerians online. Many pointed out that therapy isn’t exactly a “hot business” in a country where hunger, hardship, and hustle have become daily realities.
One user commented,
“Therapist enter Naija, end up becoming part-time counselor, part-time philanthropist, full-time warrior. Therapy no easy when your client dey fight both demons and debt.”
Another added,
“You can’t fix minds that are still trying to feed mouths. Nigeria humbles professions.”
While the reactions were mostly humorous, the underlying truth struck a chord—mental health services struggle in a society where basic survival takes top priority. The story has since ignited conversations about poverty, access to mental health care, and how local realities often clash with imported solutions.
