Tessa Thompson was born in Los Angeles, California on October 3, 1983. She was raised between where she was born and Brooklyn in New York. Her father, Marc Anthony Thompson is a singer, songwriter, and the founder of the musical collective, Chocolate Genius, Inc. He is Afro-Panamanian and her mother is half Mexican and half American ancestry. She has a younger half-sister, Zsela who is also a singer and songwriter.
Tessa Thompson attended Santa Monica High School. After graduation, she attended Santa Monica College where she joined the Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company (LAWSC) and attend Lisa Wolpe’s lectures there. She also played Hermia in a student production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream written by Williams Shakespeare. Tessa Thompson studied Cultural Anthropology in College.

In 2002, Tessa Thompson made her professional stage debut in LAWSC’s production of The Tempest. In 2003, she played Juliet in Romeo and Juliet: Antebellum New Orleans, 1836 with The Theatre @ Boston Court in Pasadena, California. This earned her an NAACP Theatre Award nomination.
In 2005, she made her first television appearance in an episode of the CBS crime drama, Cold Case. She played a lesbian bootlegger from the 1930s.
