BIOGRAPHY OF TCHÉKY KARYO
Tchéky Karyo (Baruh Djaki Karyo) is a French-Turkish actor and musician best known for his lead French police investigator Julien Baptiste in the British drama The Missing (2014) and its spin-off series Baptiste (2019).

He was born to his mother who was Greek and his father from a Sephardic Jewish family with ancestral roots in Spain. When he was young, his family moved to Paris, France, where he grew up. The spelling of his name, Djaki, was changed to Tchéky in a form of French transliteration.

He was enrolled at the Cyrano Theater where he studied acting. He then joined the Daniel Sorano company where he played many classic roles. He then joined the National Theater of Strasbourg and performed in both contemporary and classical plays.

Karyo celebrated his career when he joined the National Theater of Strasbourg, he performed in both contemporary and classical plays. He then rose to fame in French films from the 1980s, first as a character actor. He was later featured in starring roles in several notable films, such as The Bear, in which he played one of the hunters, and director Luc Besson’s Nikita, in which he played the spy mentor of the ‘heroin.
He later appeared in many Hollywood films, often portraying a French character, similarly to Jean Reno. His credit-earning films include 1994’s Nostradamus in which he played the famous French prophet, and 1995’s Bad Boys opposite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in which he played a character named Fouchet, a criminal who steals heroin from the headquarters of the Miami-Dade Police Department and attempts to kill a woman named Julie Mott, played by Téa Leoni, who witnessed a murder.
He was also featured alongside Jet Li in 2001’s Kiss of the Dragon as a corrupt and violent Parisian police detective who framed Li’s character for murder and later is killed by him in retaliation. He has starred in leading roles in major films set in wartime. His performances include his role as a vengeful French officer with Mel Gibson in The Patriot (2000), set during the American Revolutionary War, and his role as Jean de Dunois in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. In the DVD edition of The Patriot, Karyo superimposed his own lines over the French track. He appeared in Martin Sheen’s film The Way (2010) as Captain Henry.
Karyo later appeared as Julien Baptiste in the acclaimed BBC One/Starz drama series The Missing. He earned critical praise for his performance. In 2018, it was confirmed by the BBC that he would reprise his role as Julien Baptiste in a spin-off series called Baptiste, which will be written by Jack and Harry Williams. The new six-episode series debuted on February 17, 2019. He is also a musician and songwriter. He released the album Ce lien qui nous unites (in English: “The link that binds us”), and Credo in 2013 on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
