Taye was born in Newark, New Jersey and enrolled in the Allendale Columbia School and School of the Arts for her education. She also attended Syracuse University, where she earned a degree in musical theater. He began his career by appearing in various stage productions and gained acclaim and fame for the role of landlord Benny in the Tony and Pulitzer Award winning Broadway musical Rent. He then appeared in the Off-Broadway production of The Wild Party and the Broadway revival of Chicago. From the stage, he moved to television and was cast in the soap opera Guiding Light. The feature film debut How Stella Got Her Groove also made him hugely popular and he followed it up with appearances in The Wood, The Best Man and The House on Haunted Hill.
