  • ‘Send Your Youths for Enlistment,’ Army Chief Tells South East Over Recruitment Shortfall

Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has called on leaders, parents and guardians across the South East to encourage more young people to enlist in the Nigerian Army, saying the region has consistently failed to meet its recruitment quota.

Shaibu made the appeal during the passing-out parade of 2,989 regular recruits at the Nigerian Army Recruits Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State.

‘The quota is not being utilised’

The Army Chief said the newly established training depot was created to increase enlistment from the South East, but expressed concern that the objective had yet to be achieved.

“The recruitment quota from this zone has not been fully utilised. This should not continue.”

He urged community leaders, traditional rulers, parents and guardians to encourage eligible young men and women to embrace military service, describing it as a noble career built on patriotism, leadership and national service.

Army warns against social media misuse

Addressing the newly recruited soldiers, Shaibu said Nigeria continues to face serious security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, separatist violence, organised crime and cyber threats.

He urged the recruits to remain disciplined and committed to their responsibilities, warning that the nature of the country’s security environment requires courage, sacrifice and professionalism.

The Army Chief also cautioned personnel against violating the military’s social media policy, warning that sharing operational information, photographs, sensitive locations or unverified content online could attract severe disciplinary measures, including dismissal.

    Ebonyi pledges support

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army.

He pledged to provide a peaceful environment for military training and strengthen collaboration between security agencies and host communities in the state.

    1. President Tinubu Launches Power Force to Train 5,000 Youths for Smart Meter Rollout

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched the Power Force Initiative, a national programme that will train 5,000 young Nigerians to support the rollout of smart electricity meters across the country. Announced at the State House in Abuja, the initiative is aimed at tackling Nigeria’s persistent metering gap, which has left millions of electricity consumers on estimated billing. The programme forms part of the administration’s broader power sector reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda and is expected to improve electricity service delivery while creating employment opportunities for young people.

Government officials said the initiative will complement the implementation of the Electricity Act, which gives states greater responsibilities in electricity generation, transmission and distribution. The trained youths are expected to support the deployment of millions of smart meters nationwide, helping to improve revenue collection for distribution companies and reduce disputes over estimated billing. While many Nigerians have welcomed the programme for its job creation potential, stakeholders say transparent implementation and sustained investment will be crucial to achieving the desired impact and avoiding the challenges that affected previous power sector reforms.

    2. Dangote Refinery Slashes Petrol Price by Another N50

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced another N50 per litre reduction in the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), offering fresh relief to marketers and consumers amid changing global oil prices and domestic supply dynamics. The new price adjustment, which takes immediate effect, is the latest move by Africa’s largest single-train refinery as it strengthens its presence in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market.

The reduction comes as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and fuel importers continue supplying the local market, with pump prices still above N1,000 per litre in some parts of the country. Industry analysts say the latest cut could intensify competition, encourage further reductions at filling stations and help ease inflationary pressure on transportation and goods. Marketers and consumers are now watching closely to see whether rival suppliers will adjust their prices, while stakeholders continue to push for stronger local refining capacity to reduce dependence on imported fuel.

Communities including Gbagada, Mushin and Lagos Island were among the worst affected, with many residents blaming blocked drainage systems and ageing infrastructure for the recurring floods. LASEMA said the assessment will guide targeted intervention for affected families, while the Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to ongoing drainage projects and flood control measures. Investigators allege that Adeyemi falsely presented himself as the council’s Director-General, forged appointment documents and held engagements with diplomats and public officials while claiming to operate from the Federal Secretariat. Act to Be Amended

To implement the reforms, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth have been directed to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations.

The amendments will provide the legal framework required to enforce the newly approved changes.

Focus on Skills and Economic Growth

The Federal Government said the reforms are designed to transform the NYSC into a skill-driven, productivity-focused and youth empowerment institution.

According to the government, the new direction aligns with its broader economic agenda of building a $1 trillion economy by equipping young Nigerians with practical skills and creating more opportunities for productivity.

  • Buratai Questions Why Security Agencies Can Track Influencers But Not Bandits

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (Rtd), has questioned the inability of security agencies to track down bandits and kidnappers despite their ability to quickly locate ordinary citizens and social media influencers.

Buratai made the remarks during an interview on TVC, where he addressed concerns over the growing boldness of criminal gangs operating across parts of the country.

Buratai Raises Concerns Over Tracking Criminals

The retired military officer reacted to complaints about bandits who allegedly flaunt ransom proceeds and criminal activities on social media without facing immediate arrest.

He challenged the notion that such criminals cannot be traced, arguing that the same intelligence tools used to monitor and apprehend civilians should be effective in locating bandit groups.

“I don’t think they fail to locate. If they can locate ordinary citizens or social media influencers, I don’t believe they cannot locate these bandits that flaunt their loots or their activities,” Buratai said.

    Call for Improved Security Capacity

Buratai noted that criminal groups have continued to evolve their tactics, making it necessary for security agencies to strengthen their capabilities.

According to him, bandits have become increasingly emboldened, openly displaying proceeds of crime and using new methods to carry out attacks.

He stressed the need for continuous capacity building and improved operational effectiveness among security personnel to tackle the changing security landscape.

    Growing Public Frustration

His comments come amid increasing public concern over insecurity, particularly cases of kidnapping and banditry in different parts of Nigeria.

Many Nigerians have repeatedly questioned how criminal groups are able to operate openly and share content online while security agencies struggle to dismantle their networks and rescue victims.

Buratai’s remarks add to the ongoing national conversation on security reforms and the effectiveness of intelligence gathering in the fight against banditry.

The Nigerian military has raised fresh security concerns over possible terrorist attacks ahead of the upcoming Eid-El-Kabir celebrations, warning that Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) remnants may attempt isolated strikes.

The alert was contained in a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba.

  • DHQ Says Oyo School Abductors Were Displaced Terrorists Fleeing Military Operations

The Defence Headquarters has said the terrorists responsible for the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State were criminal elements displaced from other parts of the country following intensified military operations.

The military made the clarification on Thursday while reacting to reports surrounding comments credited to the Defence Headquarters over terrorist activities in the South-West region.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, the Defence Headquarters said the attackers belonged to the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) terrorist group.

Military links Oyo attack to displaced terrorists

According to the statement, the terrorists were forced out of their former strongholds due to sustained military offensives across different parts of the country.

“The recent incidence of kidnap in Oyo State was clearly perpetrated by terrorists of the JAS Group that have been dislodged from other parts of the country due to high-intensity operations being conducted all over,” the statement read.

The military maintained that troops remained actively deployed in affected areas alongside other security agencies and local stakeholders to track down criminal groups.

    DHQ reacts to controversy

The Defence Headquarters also dismissed what it described as misleading interpretations of its earlier comments regarding insecurity in the South-West.

It stressed that the Armed Forces remained committed to protecting democratic institutions and supporting constitutional governance.

“At no time did the Defence Headquarters undermine the authority of any democratically elected leader or seek to diminish the gravity of the heinous crime committed against innocent citizens by terrorist elements,” the statement added.

    Operations ongoing in Oyo communities

The clarification comes days after terrorists attacked communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting pupils, teachers and residents from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle.

The attacks also left several people dead, while one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was later killed after a disturbing video linked to the incident surfaced online.

The Defence Headquarters said the Armed Forces would continue operations aimed at dismantling terrorist and criminal networks threatening peace and stability across the country.
