  • NYSC Corps Member-to-Be Sparks Debate After Rejecting Posting to Kano Over Security Fears

A prospective member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has sparked mixed reactions online after expressing frustration over being posted to Kano State for her mandatory national service.

In a video circulating on social media, the corps member, who resides in Owerri, questioned the deployment, arguing that the posting placed her far from home and raised personal safety concerns.

    Concerns Over Posting

The young woman said she was uncomfortable with the relocation, stressing that fears about insecurity and kidnapping influenced her decision to reject the posting.

She questioned the rationale behind being deployed to a distant state despite her current location in the South-East.

“NYSC called me but I won’t be going, tell me why you’re posting me to Kano State out of all the 36 states… with the whole insecurity,” she said in the viral clip.

She also referenced financial concerns, suggesting that kidnapping risks made her uneasy about travelling to the region.

    Reactions Trail Viral Video

The video has since generated widespread debate across social media platforms, with Nigerians sharing divided opinions on the matter.

Some users defended Kano State, describing it as peaceful and culturally welcoming, while encouraging Nigerians to visit and experience the state firsthand.

Others sympathised with her concerns, arguing that insecurity fears continue to shape public perception of certain regions in the country.

    Ongoing Debate on NYSC Postings

The incident has once again revived conversations around NYSC postings, especially concerns about safety, distance, and the emotional readiness of graduates deployed to unfamiliar environments.

The NYSC scheme, established to promote national unity, continues to generate debate among young Nigerians over its relevance and structure in today’s security climate.

  • Kwankwaso Fires Back at Governor Yusuf, Defends “Political Boy” Comment

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has intensified his political disagreement with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after dismissing claims that he insulted the governor by referring to him as a “boy” or “stooge.”

Kwankwaso spoke while addressing supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano, where he defended his comments and insisted they reflected political mentorship within the Kwankwasiyya movement rather than disrespect.

    Kwankwaso Responds to Governor Yusuf

The latest exchange followed remarks by Governor Yusuf, who reportedly criticised Kwankwaso over comments suggesting he was politically subordinate to him.

Reacting to the criticism, Kwankwaso argued that several politicians who rose through his political structure had previously been described in similar terms without controversy.

“I heard that some people said they dislike being called boys. If not for insolence, how could Mai Gidan Ruwa or Aminu Goro say they were not my boys politically?” he said.

    Reference to Ganduje Raises Attention

Kwankwaso also referenced former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje while defending his position.

“How could even Ganduje deny that he was once my boy?” he added during the address to supporters.

The remarks appeared aimed at reinforcing his long-standing influence within Kano politics and the Kwankwasiyya political movement, which has remained one of the dominant political structures in the state for years.

    Political Tension Within Kwankwasiyya

The comments have further fuelled speculation about growing tension between Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf despite both figures being closely linked politically.

Governor Yusuf emerged under the Kwankwasiyya political structure and has repeatedly acknowledged Kwankwaso’s role in his political rise. However, recent public disagreements have triggered discussions about possible cracks within the movement.

Political observers in Kano believe the latest exchange may deepen internal divisions ahead of future political alignments in the state.

    Supporters React as Debate Continues

The development has generated mixed reactions among supporters of both leaders, with some defending Kwankwaso’s comments as political reality while others described the remarks as unnecessary and disrespectful.

The dispute also comes amid heightened political activities and realignments ahead of the 2027 elections in Kano and across Nigeria.

No fewer than 497 Nigerian migrants evacuated from Niger Republic have been received by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI).

The returnees arrived at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Friday afternoon from Agadez, Niger Republic.

Officials of the commission’s Kano Field Office alongside other government agencies received the migrants upon arrival.

    FG, IOM Coordinate Evacuation

Speaking during the reception exercise, the Federal Commissioner of the commission, Tijjani Aliyu Ahmed, said the evacuation followed a humanitarian arrangement between the Federal Government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Represented by Kano Field Coordinator, Lubah Liman, the commissioner disclosed that the evacuation was carried out under the Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme of the IOM.

According to him, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier informed the commission about plans to evacuate stranded Nigerians from Agadez between May 22 and May 25, 2026.

    Returnees Arrive In Two Batches

The commissioner explained that the evacuation exercise was scheduled to take place in two batches.

“The first batch, initially projected to comprise about 600 returnees, arrived with a total of 497 persons,” he said.

The migrants were later moved for profiling and humanitarian support after completing documentation processes.

    Breakdown Of Returnees

Authorities revealed that the returnees included men, women and children.

According to the breakdown released by the commission, the evacuees comprised 174 adult males, 97 adult females, 137 boys and 89 girls.

The migrants were documented through the MIDAS registration process conducted by the Nigeria Immigration Service before being moved to the Immigration Training School in Kano.

    Several Agencies Participate

The reception exercise involved multiple agencies including National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, National Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Immigration Service, NDLEA, DSS, NSCDC, SEMA and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Officials said the returnees would receive feeding, profiling and other humanitarian assistance as part of the reintegration process.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered and dismantled underground tunnels and caves allegedly used for illicit drug trade and storage in Kano State.

The agency disclosed that 19 suspects were arrested during the operation, while various quantities of illicit substances were recovered from the hidden structures.

    NDLEA Reveals Underground Drug Network

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.

According to him, the tunnels and caves were discovered in the Rimin Kebe area of Kano during a coordinated enforcement operation carried out by officers of the Kano Strategic Command.

Babafemi described the underground structures as a concealed criminal network allegedly used for drug consumption, storage and distribution.

“These videos and pictures capture the moment NDLEA officers uncovered and dismantled a network of caves and tunnels used by criminal elements for illicit drug use, trade and storage,” he said.

    Operation ‘Sharar Mafaka’

The anti-drug agency disclosed that the operation was code-named “Operation Sharar Mafaka.”

According to the statement, officers acted on intelligence and surveillance before storming the area and dismantling the underground structures.

Babafemi praised the officers involved in the operation, describing the discovery as unusual and alarming.

“It’s indeed a different life underneath the earth,” he added.

    Suspects In Custody

Authorities confirmed that the 19 suspects arrested during the raid are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation.

The NDLEA also stated that the recovered substances have been taken for forensic analysis as investigations continue into the full extent of the alleged drug network and possible collaborators.

The agency said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking activities and dismantle hidden drug hubs across Nigeria.

  • 2027: Six Kano Aspirants Step Down for Ibrahim Shekarau Ahead of Senate Race

Six senatorial aspirants from Kano State have reportedly withdrawn their ambitions in support of former governor and senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The political development has already generated attention in latest Nigerian politics news as realignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Abba Yusuf Hosts Key Political Meeting

The decision was reportedly reached during a high-level political meeting convened by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in Abuja.

Sources said the meeting lasted for several hours before all parties involved agreed to support Ibrahim Shekarau’s senatorial ambition.

The aspirants who reportedly stepped down include Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas, and Shehu Isa Driver.

    Aspirants Back Shekarau for Unity

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the aspirants said their withdrawal was aimed at promoting unity, peace, and political stability in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to them, backing Ibrahim Shekarau formed part of broader efforts to strengthen political harmony within the state.

The endorsement of the former Kano governor has since become one of the major talking points in breaking news Nigeria today, especially within northern political circles.

    Shekarau Speaks on Political Decision

Addressing supporters after the meeting, Ibrahim Shekarau reportedly said the decision was reached after careful consideration of the political situation and available options.

He also sought the opinion of those present regarding the move and received unanimous support from attendees, signalling collective endorsement of the arrangement.

The former governor remains one of the most influential political figures in Kano State due to his long-standing grassroots support and political structure.

    Former Kano Governor Still Influential

Ibrahim Shekarau rose to national prominence after serving as governor of Kano State between 2003 and 2011 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

His administration was widely linked to education reforms, infrastructure expansion, and policies centred on social welfare and Islamic principles.

After leaving office as governor, Shekarau represented Kano Central in the Senate and later served as Minister of Education under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Despite several political realignments over the years, the former governor has remained a major force in Kano politics, with strong influence across party lines ahead of the 2027 general elections.

  • Kano LG Chairman Distributes Detergents to Women, Sparks Mixed Reactions in Kiru

The Chairman of Kiru Local Government Area in Kano State, Abdullahi Saidu, has distributed detergents to 500 women as part of an empowerment initiative, triggering mixed reactions across the community. The items were shared with beneficiaries from Yalwa ward.

The intervention comes at a time of increasing grassroots political activities ahead of future elections.

    Detergent Distribution Targets Household Support

According to reports, the items distributed included brands such as Omo, Klin and Viva. The chairman said the initiative was designed to support women and reduce some of their domestic burdens.

He described the effort as part of ongoing attempts to reach vulnerable groups within the local government area.

    Similar Outreach Seen Across Constituency

The development follows a related intervention by the member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa. He recently distributed diapers to pregnant women in parts of the constituency.

Observers say such programmes are becoming more common as political engagement at the community level begins to intensify.

Residents React, Question Impact of Initiative

The detergent distribution has, however, drawn criticism from some residents who questioned its impact. Several voices described the gesture as inadequate, calling for more meaningful and sustainable support.

Muhammad Aliyu Junaid criticised the move, suggesting the items did not address pressing needs. Others echoed similar concerns about the value of the intervention.

    Calls Grow for Sustainable Empowerment

Some stakeholders argued that empowerment efforts should focus on long-term economic benefits rather than short-term relief. They said initiatives that support income generation would have a more lasting impact on households.

Residents also raised concerns about the optics of such programmes, particularly when widely publicised.

  • Kwankwaso Receives ADC Membership Card in Kano as Obi, Amaechi, Tambuwal Attend

Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has formally joined the African Democratic Congress, receiving his membership card on Monday afternoon at Gidan Kwankwasiyya on Miller Road, Kano, completing a political journey that began with his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party just 24 hours earlier.

Confirming the move on his X handle moments after receiving the card, Kwankwaso wrote simply: “New Dawn. We are ADC.”

    Who came to Kano

The event carried unmistakable weight, drawing a roll call of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition figures to Kano to witness the formal registration.

In attendance were ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark; ADC National Secretary and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola; former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi; former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal; former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; Senator Dino Melaye; former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun; and former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

The high-powered delegation had arrived at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport earlier in the day, where they were received by the immediate past Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, who himself resigned from office last week ahead of his own expected defection alongside Kwankwaso.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, already a member of the ADC, wasted no time in welcoming Kwankwaso. “When men of conviction come together, power trembles. Welcome aboard, @KwankwasoRM,” he wrote on X.

What Kwankwaso said at the event

Kwankwaso described his exit from the NNPP as a difficult but necessary decision, saying the current trajectory of Nigeria’s political landscape demanded strategic realignment. He expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the platform it had provided and paid tribute to the Kwankwasiyya Movement members whose loyalty had sustained his political career across multiple parties and decades.

The defection is not a solo move. The Kwankwasiyya Movement has directed all its members across Nigeria to proceed immediately to register with the ADC at their respective wards, local government areas, and states. “This strategic decision, as always, has been taken in the best interest of the movement, our state, and the nation at large,” the movement’s statement said.

Kwankwaso is also expected to be joined in the ADC by key political allies, including Senator Rufa’i Hanga and the Kano State NNPP Chairman, Hashim Dungurawa.

    What the ADC now represents

With Kwankwaso‘s formal entry, the ADC has now consolidated Nigeria’s most formidable opposition coalition in a generation. The party’s membership now includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Abubakar Malami, Aminu Tambuwal, Emeka Ihedioha, and now Kwankwaso, uniting figures who collectively received over 12 million votes across different parties in the 2023 presidential election.

Kwankwaso had polled 1,496,687 votes in the 2023 presidential race, finishing fourth behind Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi. His entry into the ADC brings with it the Kwankwasiyya Movement’s deep grassroots structure in Kano and across the North-West, a region where his influence was decisive in delivering the Kano State governorship to the NNPP’s Abba Yusuf in 2023.

The ADC is yet to announce its 2027 presidential candidate or ticket composition. All indications point toward a joint Atiku-Obi or Obi-Kwankwaso arrangement, though no official announcement has been made. The party’s next major milestone will be a national convention expected later in the year, at which its 2027 strategy will be formally unveiled. The APC has not responded to Monday’s events. RNN.NG will continue to follow all 2027 opposition developments as they unfold.
