  • ISWAP Blocks Maiduguri–Damaturu Highway After Deadly Jilli Airstrike Sparks Controversy

Suspected ISWAP terrorists have blocked the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway following a recent military airstrike on Jilli market, in what security sources describe as a retaliatory move after the operation disrupted insurgent activities in the area.

The blockade reportedly occurred days after the air operation along the Borno–Yobe border, intensifying concerns over security and civilian safety in the region.

    What happened

According to security sources, the insurgents moved onto the highway and halted movement shortly after the strike on Jilli market.

A counter-terrorism expert, identified as @mobilisingniger on X, shared a video showing the development, describing it as a show of defiance by the group.

“After the airstrike in Jilli market, they started acting aggressively. Today, they blocked the road and stopped movement,” he said.

    Airstrike and casualty controversy

Last Saturday, the Nigerian military carried out an airstrike on Jilli market during peak trading hours, with reports indicating that at least 56 people were feared dead and 14 others injured.

The strike was believed to be targeting Boko Haram insurgents and their collaborators, but multiple sources claimed the intended targets were missed, raising concerns about civilian casualties.

Jilli market, located between Gubio and Geidam Local Government Areas, is known to attract traders from surrounding communities across Borno and Yobe states.

    Government defends operation

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, however, insisted that Jilli market had been officially shut down five years ago due to its links to insurgent logistics.

He described the location as a long-standing hub for terrorist activities, stating that its closure was part of efforts to disrupt supply chains used by armed groups.

Similarly, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, defended the airstrike, rejecting claims that civilians were killed.

He maintained that the operation was a deliberate move to dismantle a key support base for insurgents rather than a tragic error.

    Rising tension in the region

The highway blockade has heightened fears among residents and travellers, as the Maiduguri–Damaturu road remains a critical route linking parts of the North-East.

The development adds to ongoing security challenges in the region, with authorities under pressure to contain insurgent threats and protect civilian lives.

  • Bandits Abduct Kwara Monarch, Wife In Midnight Palace Attack

Suspected bandits have abducted a traditional ruler, his wife, and another individual after attacking a palace in Olayinka community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State in the early hours of Saturday.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the palace around 1:40am, firing sporadically before whisking the monarch away to an unknown destination, in what residents described as a terrifying overnight raid.

    How the attack happened

Sources said the attackers arrived heavily armed and met little resistance as panic spread across the palace.

“They came around 1:40am and started shooting. Everyone was scared. They took the monarch, his wife, and another person,” a source disclosed.

The abducted monarch was said to have been recently installed by the state government, making the incident even more shocking within the community.

    Rising concern in Kwara South

The latest abduction marks the third case involving a traditional ruler in Kwara South within a year, raising fresh concerns about security in the area.

In 2025, two monarchs in the region were kidnapped by suspected bandits and later released after ransom payments were reportedly made.

Residents say the repeated attacks have heightened fear, with calls growing for stronger security presence across affected communities.

  • ISWAP Claims Series of Deadly Attacks on Nigerian Forces, Alleges Coordinated Strikes Across Borders

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for a wave of attacks targeting Nigerian security forces and neighbouring countries, detailing coordinated operations involving explosives, ambushes, and assaults on military and police positions.

ISWAP details alleged attacks on troops

The claims were published in Arabic and later translated into English, with copies circulating on social media platform X on Thursday.

According to the group, its fighters executed multiple operations using roadside bombs and ambush tactics against security convoys and checkpoints.

One of the key claims involved an attack on a military patrol in northern Nigeria.

“What actually happened was that the roadside bomb exploded directly on the patrol, causing the death of seven soldiers, including an officer with the rank of Major, wounding others, and destroying a four-wheel-drive vehicle,” the statement read.

    Ambush operations and cross-border claims

ISWAP also claimed it carried out an attack on an army position near a town’s outskirts, allegedly designed to lure troops into an ambush.

The group further alleged attacks on police officers and local militia members, saying dozens were killed across operations in Nigeria and neighbouring Niger Republic.

It also referenced an attack on a checkpoint at the entrance of Rifa city in Niger Republic, claiming casualties and destruction of military equipment.

“11 attacks in one week” — group claims escalation

The publication claimed that at least 11 attacks were carried out within one week, resulting in 42 vehicles being burned or disabled.

Beyond West Africa, ISWAP also included claims of attacks in Syria, including an alleged strike on a government vehicle near Raqqa.

    Allegations against Nigerian military

The group accused Nigerian troops of carrying out retaliatory actions against civilian communities near Monguno, describing them as “desperate and uncivilised steps… to cover up its repeated failures and heavy losses.”

    Security caution over claims

Security analysts have urged caution over the reports, warning that insurgent groups often exaggerate operational success for propaganda purposes.

A security source told Punch that such statements should be treated carefully, noting that terrorist organisations frequently rely on misinformation and psychological warfare to shape public perception.

  • Bandits Abduct JAMB Candidates, Other Passengers in Benue Night Attack

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted several passengers, including candidates heading for the ongoing JAMB examination, after attacking a Benue Links bus along the Makurdi-Otukpo road in Benue State.

    Attack on night journey

The incident occurred on Wednesday night when the bus, travelling from Makurdi to Otukpo, was ambushed near its destination.

Passengers on board were reportedly young men and women heading to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination scheduled for Thursday.

A source said the vehicle, carrying about 18 passengers, was waylaid around 8pm, with most occupants taken into the bush.

“Two people, the driver and one passenger, managed to escape. Incidentally, the passengers were mainly young men and women going to write JAMB,” the source said.

    Police confirm abduction

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, confirmed the attack, stating that 14 passengers were abducted while one victim escaped.

He said security operatives had launched a rescue operation and were already combing the area.

“I am in Otukpo now with my team, heading the operation. Fourteen passengers were kidnapped, and one escaped,” he said.

    Investigation underway

The police also revealed that the journey may have violated transport regulations, noting that Benue Links has a policy against night travel.

According to the commissioner, the driver allegedly picked up passengers after official hours, a development now under investigation.

“But as we are investigating, we are on the ground to make sure that the victims are rescued,” he added.

    Local authorities react

Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the attack and said security operatives had been deployed into nearby forests.

“The victims are mainly young boys and girls coming to Otukpo to write JAMB,” he said.

    Rising insecurity on route

The Makurdi-Otukpo road has witnessed repeated attacks in recent months, raising concerns among travellers and residents over growing insecurity in the area.

The latest incident adds to fears around the safety of commuters, especially students travelling for national examinations.

  • Bandits Kill, Kidnap Several in Coordinated Attacks Across Kwara Communities

Suspected bandits have killed several residents and abducted others in coordinated late-night attacks on three rural communities in Isin and Ifelodun local government areas of Kwara State, deepening security concerns in the region.

    How the attacks unfolded

The attacks occurred on Wednesday night, targeting Iwo Odo-Ore in Isin LGA, as well as Gaa-Idera and Gaa Dembo-Agunjin in Ifelodun LGA.

Residents said the gunmen stormed the communities simultaneously, shooting sporadically and abducting victims during the raids.

In Gaa-Odera, at least two people were shot while two others were kidnapped.

    Heavy abductions reported

The violence was more intense in Iwo Odo-Ore, where at least five residents were abducted, including a prominent figure, Alhaji Yusuf Yunusa, alongside four Hausa residents.

Sources described Yusuf as a well-known politician in the area and a school proprietor with interests in both Kwara and Lagos.

He was reportedly preparing for a family Islamic ceremony before the attack.

    Wedding disrupted in Ifelodun

In Ifelodun LGA, bandits abducted six people in Gaa Dembo-Agunjin and two others in Gaa-Idera.

The victims reportedly included family members linked to a wedding scheduled for Thursday.

“They kidnapped the bride’s mother and one other person,” a source said, adding that cattle were also rustled during the attack.

    Casualties and injuries

Residents said the attackers opened fire during the عملیات, leaving at least two people injured.

“One person was hit in the hand by a bullet,” a source confirmed.

The number of those killed has not been officially verified, but multiple sources insist casualties were recorded.

    Authorities yet to respond

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies have not issued an official statement on the attacks.

The incident adds to growing concerns over rising banditry and insecurity in parts of Kwara State and neighbouring regions.

  • NCS Raises Alarm as ISWAP, Boko Haram Plot Attacks on Abuja Airport, Prison

Nigeria’s security forces have been placed on high alert following intelligence that sleeper cells linked to ISWAP and Boko Haram are planning coordinated attacks on key infrastructure in Abuja and parts of Niger State.

    What intelligence reveals

According to a memo obtained by The Associated Press, the planned targets include the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and a prison facility in Abuja, as well as a military detention centre in neighbouring Niger State.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) warned that the threat is credible, prompting heightened vigilance across security agencies.

    Planned targets and strategy

Authorities say the suspected terrorists aim to attack strategic locations and free detained fighters.

“Their intention is to release detained terrorists and inflict significant damage on critical aviation infrastructure,” the memo stated.

Security analysts also noted a worrying pattern in the planned attacks.

“An analysis of the report reveals a concerning correlation between the potential targeting of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja and recent large-scale attacks on aviation facilities in Niger Republic,” the report added.

    Link to Niger attacks

The alert follows a similar incident in January in Niamey, Niger Republic, where terrorists attacked an air force base, injuring four soldiers and damaging an aircraft.

Experts believe the latest plot may be an attempt to replicate those attacks within Nigeria.

“This suggests a possible intent by terrorists to replicate the attack patterns within Nigeria,” the report noted.

    Security concerns deepen

Nigeria has continued to battle multiple security threats in recent years, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry, and mass kidnappings.

Data from the Global Terrorism Index released on March 19, 2026, shows the country ranked fourth globally, with a 46 per cent rise in terrorism-related deaths in 2025.

    US advisory and FG response

The development comes days after the United States issued a travel advisory authorising non-essential embassy staff and their families to leave Abuja over security concerns.

However, the Federal Government dismissed the move as routine.

Officials described the advisory as a “precautionary measure based on internal protocols,” insisting there is no cause for panic.

  • Peter Okoye, Paul Okoye, Mr Macaroni Lead Outrage Over Jos Palm Sunday killings

Nigerian entertainers and public figures have taken to social media to condemn the Palm Sunday massacre in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, where gunmen opened fire on residents on Sunday evening, killing at least 22 people and injuring several others, with many directing their anger at both the Plateau State government and President Bola Tinubu over what they described as a failure to protect Nigerian lives.

The attack, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. on March 29 at a bar in the Gari Ya Waye community, has sent shockwaves through the country, particularly among entertainers with roots in Plateau State.

    Peter Okoye

Singer Peter Okoye, who grew up in Plateau State, expressed raw emotion in his reaction on X. “My heart is heavy… My prayers are with my people in Jos,” he wrote, accompanied by a string of broken heart emojis.

In a separate post that surfaced amid the outrage, Peter also directly questioned the Nigerian government’s response, expressing disbelief that a confirmed death toll of dozens had not prompted a formal presidential address to the nation. He called the administration’s response incompetent and said the recurring tragedies were “unbearably heart-wrenching.”

    Paul Okoye (Rudeboy)

Paul Okoye, Peter’s twin brother and fellow P-Square alumnus, took a sharper tone. “We are not angry enough!!!” he wrote on X. “Maybe na until God come down to earth.” The singer, who was also born in Plateau State, used his platform to challenge what he described as widespread public passivity in the face of repeated security failures.

    Mr Macaroni

Comedian and activist Mr Macaroni was the most direct in his criticism of the presidency, writing: “President @officialABAT is running the most useless government in the history of useless governments!!! How many more Nigerians have to die due to this abysmal level of incompetence? Nigerians wake up every day to lament one tragedy or the other. Unbearably heart-wrenching!!!

In a follow-up post, Mr Macaroni said he could not understand how 40 confirmed deaths in Jos had not prompted the president to address the nation. “Zero accountability, zero responsibility!!!” he wrote.

    Ice Prince

Jos-born rapper Ice Prince reflected on the community’s long history of suffering. “Since 2001, Jos, Jos, Jos. My people have suffered too much tbh… Thoughts and prayers,” he wrote on X — a reference to the cycle of ethno-religious violence that has plagued the city for over two decades.

    Nathaniel Bassey and Jerry Eze

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey offered prayers rather than political criticism, writing: “JOS! You shall not be broken. The forces of evil in our nation shall never prevail. We shall see their end. It is well with you, Jos. Let there be light!” Pastor Jerry Eze of Streams of Joy International also reacted, calling on divine protection for the community.

    Kunle Remi

Nollywood actor Kunle Remi, who made headlines last week for speaking out about fuel prices, also added his voice to the chorus of condemnation, describing the attack as deeply painful and calling on the government to take decisive action to protect lives in Plateau State.

The celebrity reactions came alongside physical protests on the ground. Hundreds of angry residents took to the streets on Monday morning, defying the 48-hour curfew imposed by the Plateau State government, to protest the killings and demand urgent action from authorities. Protesters gathered at the scene of the attack, expressing outrage over the continued loss of lives in the state.

On social media, users echoed the same frustration. One commenter wrote: “The government in Nigeria has failed over and over again in protecting the lives and property of Nigerians. This government must go.” Another, @Frankline Obi, warned that prolonged insecurity could radicalise youth: “Plateau youths have endured enough pain. When peace is met with bullets, frustration turns to fire.”

The Gari Ya Waye attack occurred on Palm Sunday, the opening of Holy Week in the Christian calendar, in a predominantly Christian community in Jos North. A 48-hour curfew remains in place across Jos North LGA until April 1, 2026. Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the attack as barbaric and unprovoked and said security agencies had been mobilised, but no arrests had been announced as of Tuesday morning.
