Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born on July 6, 1946, in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Due to complications during labor, his mother’s midwives were forced to use two pairs of forceps during his birth; however, the use of these forceps accidentally severed a nerve and caused paralysis in parts of Stallone’s face.
This resulted in paralysis of the lower left side of his face (including parts of his lip, tongue, and chin), giving him his signature snarling expression and slurred speech.
Prior to attending Miami Dade College, Stallone attended Notre Dame Academy, Lincoln High School, and Charlotte Hall Military Academy in Philadelphia.
From September 1965 to June 1967, he attended the American College of Switzerland. From 1967 to 1969, he returned to the United States to study drama at the University of Miami.
Sylvester is the first child and first son of Frank Stallone Sr. who is a hairdresser and beautician, and his wife Jacqueline Jackie Stallone an astrologer, a dancer, and also a promoter of women’s wrestling. His father is an Italian who was born in Gioia del Colle, Italy and immigrated to the United States in the early 1930s. While his American mother is of French and Ashkenazi Jewish descent.
