Suzann Pettersen was born in Oslo, Norway, on April 7, 1981. Both parents, Axel Pettersen and Mona Pettersen, were involved in sports instruction. Pettersen has two brothers, Stefan Pettersen and Gunerius Pettersen. Suzann Pettersen is a distant relative of the merchant Gunerius Pettersen.
As an amateur, Pettersen became a five-time Norwegian amateur champion, winning the British Girls tournament in 1999. She has represented her country in the world of golf by playing several top-level amateur competitions and winning the Espirito Santo Trophy in 1998 and 2000. , concluding as the best person in his second appearance.
