Susan Mikula is a famous American artist and photographer. She is also known for being the partner of television host, political commentator and author Rachel Maddow. Susan has spent much of her life working as an accountant while her artwork was featured in several exhibits as part of group shows.

SUSAN MIKULA: EARLY CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION, CAREER

Susan Mikula was born in 1958, in New Jersey, United States. Mikula grew up in the urban, industrialized part of town, but later her family moved to a small town in New Hampshire. Growing up in a small town, she had an inclination towards art and even took color theory classes at Hampshire College in Massachusetts.

Susan never really had any education or training in photography. She had a curious nature from a young age; she therefore taught herself the mechanics of her chosen medium. It has never been tied to the constraints of orthodox thought that can often hamper an artist’s way of thinking. In doing so, she was able to strengthen her art and remove the familiarity from her subjects that made her work feel strange and absurd.

She started photography in early 2007 where she slowly developed her own style with vintage cameras and instant film. His work mostly included old Polaroid cameras and expired film, and this was a key factor in his method. When you observe his photographs, you can get a sense of the intuitive mind behind the camera. Susan is not known for post-production or even artificial lighting, she simply scans and reproduces the Polaroid Print.

In 2008 Susan published her first book ‘Susan Miluka: Photographs ‘ Throughout her career she has featured her work in numerous exhibitions; alone or in a group. Recently, in 2017, she was hired by the Art in Embassies Program to work for the US Consulate in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.

Susan met her life partner Maddow in 1999. Maddow was working on her doctoral thesis during this time and badly needed a job; while Mikula was looking for people to work in his yard. So the two men met, and their first meeting was a lot like ‘Desperate Housewives’, as Maddow would later recall. The two of them finally had their first date at an “NRA Ladies Day” on the Range event

The couple have been together for 18 years and live in western Massachusetts and their apartment in New York. They generally enjoy spending time away from the city and are usually at their Massachusetts home with their Labrador
