Sundar Pichai born Pichai Sundararajan is an Indian-American business executive. He joined Google in 2004 after completing interviews. In 2015, after 11 years, he got the opportunity to serve as CEO of tech giant Google, for which he is best known. In those eleven years, he is said to have received an offer to become Microsoft’s third CEO. But he refused.
Sundar has served on the boards of Magic Leap, CapitalG (formerly Google Capital) and Alphabet Inc.

- Anjali Pichai geb. Haryani– Sundar met his future wife while pursuing a college education at IIT Kharagpur. Anjali is from Rajasthan, India and studied Chemical Engineering at Sundars Batch. They became good friends in their early college years and began dating in their final year of undergraduate studies. A short time later, Sundar had to leave India to study in the US and could hardly afford to speak to Anjali once every six months due to the lack of money. Meanwhile, Anjali worked 3 years as a Business Analyst for Accenture and later managed to get a job in US to join Sundar. Once the couple reunited, they married soon after. Together they have a son named Kavya and a daughter named Kiran. Anjali works as a Business Operations Manager at Intuit in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is well known that she is partly responsible for Sundar’s rise to CEO at Google because she stopped him from accepting competing job offers.

- One of Sundar’s childhood dreams was to become a cricketer.
- His family was not very wealthy. He slept with his younger brother in the living room of a two-room apartment.
- Sundar’s house did not have a TV during his childhood. When he was 12 years old, his family got a rotary phone for the first time. After a few years they got a refrigerator and his mother didn’t have to cook every day. The life-changing convenience of technology drew him to the field.
- As a teenager, he developed a unique talent for memorizing every phone number he ever dialed on his dial phone and became a walking phone book for all his relatives.
- He wrote his first software program to create a chess game.
- Despite earning a full scholarship to Stanford, his father had to withdraw $1000 from his savings, which was more than his annual salary, to cover the cost of Sundar’s plane tickets and other expenses to enter the United States.
- He joined Mckinsey & Company in 2002 as a management consultant before joining Google in 2004.
- Sundar interviewed at Google on April 1, 2004. This was also the day Gmail was launched. He suspected the email service was just another April Fool’s joke by the company.
- In 2006, Microsoft made Bing the default search engine in Internet Explorer instead of Google. Sundar approached computer manufacturers and persuaded them to pre-install the Google toolbar to keep Google’s popularity among users.
- He also persuaded Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin to create their own browser, which led to the creation of Google Chrome, the most widely used internet browser today.
- In 2011, Sundar was promoted to the role of vice president of product at Twitter, and in 2014 he is said to be in negotiations to become Microsoft’s third CEO. However, he declined both offers.
- Sundar was responsible for integrating Android into Google applications when he took over the role of Andy Rubin in 2013.
